What is the question in the LCD vs. LED debate? Quality versus price and mobility are the two main champs in the debate and both are evident in Samsung's current lineup of Samsung HD LCD tv models and Samsung LED tv models.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) utilizes liquid crystal "panels" that manipulate ambient light to produce a picture. To be clearer on the subject, these are not huge panels like you would think, but very small ones. In the absence of ambient, or "room light," LCD TVs have to use back lighting. The downside is that these panels are not capable of completely blacking out the back lighting for optimum contrast. In other words, if it's midnight at the POW camp on your TV, the guy trying to escape might be a little "fuzzy" around the edges. What's more, your "midnight black" will most likely look a little purple because the crystals can't completely block out the light needed to show our hero on the screen. Samsung HD LCD TV eliminates this by having developed a system of software and a screen "polarizer" that cuts back on bleed-over light, thus giving a blacker black.

LED (Light Emitting Diode) is nearly a throwback to the old school "tube" TVs. Instead of using three colored proton guns though, HDTV LED TVs use very small LED lights. The same type you use in that nifty wind-up flashlight you got for Father's Day. (Or not-tell your kids you want one if you don't know what one is.) The up-side of Samsung LED TVs is that the blacks are blacker. The reason for this is that when a light is out, it is out. There is no bleed over from the light next to it. Thus you have a blacker, more clearly defined picture. LED TV uses four colored lights; two green, one blue and one red. Using different combinations of this lighting produces your color spectrum. This blows out the competing LCDs by allowing more vivid color. Samsung HD LCD TV compromised on this when they began installing LED lights for backlighting and it paid off. The product was the color range of LCD with the blackness capability of LED.

Both types suffer from motion blurring, but LCD has lost this war battle marginally-especially at the HD level. The three most common causes for this are:

- Pixels move faster than color can respond.
- The speed of the movie-what speed it was shot in
- The human eye's ability to track speed

The new series of Samsung LCD flat panel addresses this and using a combination of software and firmware, they've been able to increase their refresh rate by four times. In other words, it would be the difference between a flip book and a 35mm home movie projector. Or for the younger generation, it's the same as getting four times the frame rate.

The big differences between LCD and LED are price. Because of it being a newer technology, LED tends to be pricier than LCDs and a bit lighter. Samsung HD LCD TV offers an alternative that is cheaper than LED, has better quality than many traditional LCDs of competitors.

Screen Burn? What exactly is Screen Burn and how is it avoided? Screen burn sounds like a serious disease of sorts, and I guess one could call it a disease of 'Plasma displays'. Simply speaking, screen burn is image retention or the lingering shadow of an image on a darkened screen. Some of the pixels have been damaged due to age or use and because they function from a light source, they are dimmer than undamaged pixels. This happens with repeated use because the damaged pixels then develop a memory from color info provided to it over a period of time. This information is repeatedly used over and over and is more or less 'burned' into the screen forming the outline of the static image on the screen. Once an image is burned onto a screen, it is permanently damaged. Then the screen will need to be replaced. However, these tips can help prevent this from happening to a new screen.First - turn off the Plasma television when it is not being watched because it will leave a static image on the screen. Also, when 'pausing' a DVD, do so briefly so as to avoid the potential for 'Screen Burn'. A static image develops from ghosting (light burn) to a permanent burn.

The plasma screen of a new television is more prone to image retention, 'Burn', during the first couple of hundred hours of use because the phosphors are new and burn more intensely. This will, of course, intensify a possible 'ghosting' effect. This situation usually corrects itself when subsequent pictures are shown. Just remember that the longer a static image is left on a new screen, the more likely it is that simple 'ghosting' will change to a permanent burn. A good way to prevent this is to keep the contrast set at a level up to fifty percent since this will keep the phosphors from heating to a greater intensity. Keep in mind that the greater the contrast and intensity, the more chance of permanent image retention. Use all the plasma television's features - the reset or anti-burn feature. These are settings designed to reset or recalibrate the pixel intensity levels and decreases the potential for burn - ghosting. This recalibration needs to be done after about one hundred hours of viewing. This process affects the phosphor lifespan so use it only when necessary. Another important point - do some comparison shopping because some popular brands seem to be plagued with this problem. Another important tip - use all television settings in the Owner's Manual - full-time picture shift, automatic screen-saver, etc.

As previously mentioned, some brands of plasma screens are more prone to burning, so be aware of scaling as it, too, is related to this type of problem. Be sure the new monitor has adequate scaling as a scaling of 4:3 allows comfortable viewing of widescreens. Don't leave the black horizontal bar displayed at the bottom of the screen for a prolonged period of time - this is considered static imaging. It is best to watch all programming in 'full-screen' for maximum viewing benefits.

Higher quality televisions are less likely to suffer 'ghosting' and 'burn', but once the screens have been used properly (avoiding the errors noted prior and utilizing the tips provided), any screen of lesser quality is less likely to encounter problems with image retention.

Advanced technology and research and development in entertainment communications assure improvements in this area. This is not a problem that should create worries for the average consumer because caution and care will go a long way to improve your plasma viewing experience. Proper care and attention to what is being displayed and for what length of time it is on the screen will a go a long way in extending the life of a new plasma monitor.

With their Italian pedigree and award winning designs, Elchim hair dryers are among the best on the market. There are several models to choose from, however, my personal choice would be the 5000 Da Vinci Professional. It has all the features you want a good hairdryer to have.

You have probably heard of ionic hair dryers - the negative ions reduce drying time, allow moisture to penetrate the hair shaft and seal cuticles and help protect hair from heat damage - but you may not know (I certainly didn't until recently) that there are two ways of producing these beneficial ions.

The spark method is used in cheaper dryers (the majority that are sold). Basically, a spark is created, creating negative ions. However, the ions produced are neutralized in just a few seconds so you won't be getting the full benefit of negative ion technology.

The second method, used by the more expensive - and better brands - use a continuous method. The Elchim Da Vinci hair dryer (as do all the company's dryers) uses the company's 'Negative Ion Generating System' to produce a continuous flow. Ions produced this way aren't neutralized, so you get the full benefit of this technology.

What will impress you about the Da Vinci is that it's perfectly balanced with an ergonomically designed handle - the switches are located in the centre so it's easy to use regardless of whether you're right or left handed. The switches are also 'soft touch', anti-slip. Finally, the casing is made from a highly durable polycarbonate material which is resistant to heat and scratches. You have two color choices: black or red.

One thing to always look out for when buying a hair dryer is the size of the motor: the bigger the better. Well, the Da Vinci from Elchim doesn't fail in this department. You get a HP motor with an output of 2150 watts. Most other high-end dyers come with motor sizes between 1900 and 2000 watts - the Solano Top Power Hair Dryer comes with 1874 watts and the T3 Evolution Hair Dryer comes with 2000 watts.

The appliance also comes with a concentrator nozzle and comb. I like the nozzle especially as it comes in a sharp shape design that allows for very precise styling.

There are 4 heat and 2 speed settings, and what makes this dryer my favorite in the Elchim collection is that it also features a cold-shot button. Surprisingly, the 2001 and the Urugano models don't.

The Elchim 5000 Da Vinci hair dryer isn't cheap but it's all quality. If you are going to buy from Elchim then this is definitely the model to choose.
