Amazing tv, stunning, mouth dropping!!!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have had this tv for about 2 weeks, i purchased the tv April 30 and got a call that they could deliver on the 7th of May which is a lot sooner than what amazon suggested which was the 13th but i would not be able to since i was going to be at work so i said how about next Wednesday the 14th and they said fine. The delivery service was amazing. The delivery period was between 8am and noon and it was here right before 10. They came inside took off their shoes and took it out of the box and brought it up stairs for me and set it up to make sure it worked and offered to take the box for me.

Now to the actual tv, one word….AMAZING, i upgraded from a off brand 26 inch tube tv that sucked and had no inputs at all i could not even plug in a vcr or dvd player. I did quite a bit of research when i was ready to get a new tv, i went to Walmart, best buy, circuit city, Sam’s club and ABT Electronics in Chicago Illinois. I did not want to spend much more then a 1000 on a tv and i wanted a 32 or 37 inch tv i was looking at a Vizio and a Toshiba and was pretty sure i was going to get a Toshiba from ABT since if i ever did have any problems they would just come out themselves and fix it. The tv would have been a little more then 1300 but my cousin told me he just bought a 52 inch Sony xb4 which is over 3000 dollars off of amazon and i decided i would check it out myself. I just typed in lcd tv and went through the tvs and finally came upon the Samsung ln37a550 and was pretty sure i was going to get it but then i saw the Samsung ln40a550 was only a hundred or so more i was like i have to get it. It has double the contrast ratio which you really can not focus on to much if your looking at different brands since there is no exact science to measuring the exact contrast ratio but it has a very quick response time of 5 seconds and when i saw the free shipping i busted out my credit card and purchased it. I could not be more pleased with my purchase. I bought a ps3 and hooked it up with a hdmi cable i got from monoprice.com for 10 bucks and that is another site and item i would really recommend to anyone DO NOT BUY EXPENSIVE CABLES. there is no visual difference between the 100 dollar and 5 dollar hdmi cable unless it is over 25 feet so don’t waste your money. Call of Duty 4 is amazing on this 40 inch tv and so is blu ray movies.

Some people have said the speakers on this tv suck but they really don’t they are better than any other tv out there of course they aren’t surround speakers so don’t say the speakers suck because they aren’t suppose to be same quality, but they are really good for just being the tv speakers. I am about to get a Denon receiver so i can hook up my 3.1 Boston acoustic surround sound system.

I also hooked my tv to my computer through a dvi to a hdmi cable which i also bought on monoprice.com for 5 bucks for a 10 foot cable. The quality on the tv is so much better then on the lcd monitor i was using, but it stretches the screen, i think it is just my video card but i thought i would let you know.

Overall i rate this tv the best i have seen. I researched for a tv for 3 full months and this tv is by far the best i have seen. If you do get this tv keep looking at Amazon because they do a 30 day price match if you find it cheaper or if their price lowers within the first 30 days they will give you back the difference i have already received over 50 dollars which is what i used to get my video game. Well i think i wrote enough so i will let you get back to buying this item because it is so worth it, trust me. BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

November 18, 2008

Alright so i have had this tv for about 6 months and still to this day i love this tv, I have everything for this tv because this tv is amazing. I got a 3.1 Boston acoustics surround sound with a Denon receiver, i have playstation 3 hooked up through hdmi which is flawless when playing blu-ray. I have a mac mini hooked up to the tv and it is amazing to do stuff like photoshop and all that on this large tv. I also hood up a view sat satellite HD box with a dish and now i have over a 1000 channels and it is crystal clear. All this is mounted on a tv stand that i got at Wal-Mart and it looks perfect i will take a picture of everything and put it up soon as soon as i can find my digital camera.

Well let me tell you about the performance of the tv, the tv is perfect in every way, i wish i got this tv a long time ago but oh well i have it now. About 2 months into getting the tv i heard crackling noises when i would turn off the tv after using it for awhile, i got scared because i spend all this money and i didn’t want anything bad to happen to it but it went away after a week or so and i haven’t heard it since. I wish the tv had more hdmi ports but luckily i have my receiver that has plenty that compensates for the lack on the tv. Dont hook up your tv to your computer through hdmi unless you have a good video card because it stretches it out so you cant see the edges of the screen but when i switched it to dvi it was perfect. If you haven’t listened to me yet and are still debating on buying this tv STOP IT AND JUST BUY IT!!!! you will not regret it.

Excellent TV; Great price!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Ordered this TV from amazon on 4/30 and came to my apartment on 5/5…not a bad turn-around time. The TV was actually ready for delivery on 5/2 but I was stuck at work.

Easy set-up, using HDMI to Time Warner cable.

I’m a sports fanatic and there’s absolutely nothing better than HD sports on this set. The colors are so detailed, bright…flawless picture. Baseball looks great but I must admit, Basketball in HD is breath-taking.

Comes with 3 HDMI ports so I will eventually buy a PS3 for the blu-ray experience.

The casing itself is glossy black and comes with a neat blue light at the bottom of the Samsung.

Also priced $400-500 cheaper than any big retail store, this is a deal. My only gripe was the delivery service Amazon used. The company is called CEVO and I scheduled a delivery appointment for 9am-1apm. Driver didn’t come until 4:30pm and never called ahead of time to tell me he was going to be late. The manager was very apologetic and seemed to push the driver to get to my place ASAP.

For a 1080p set, you won’t find a better quality for the price. Looks like i’ll be staying in a lot now.

Great HDTV for a Great Price!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This Samsung HDTV is amazing for the price. You could not possibly find a better price for a new 40″ 1080P HDTV! I read many of the reviews on Amazon for the LN40A550 before making my final decision and I am very happy with my purchase.

The concerns for the audio quality with the TVs speakers are not an issue since I am running audio through a surround system via the digital optical out.

Delivery and Setup: CEVA was excellent, even though there was some confusion with my tracking number (a quick call fixed that). The TV is easily programmable and I really like the customizable input labels.

Picture Quality and Settings: The LN40A550 has a spectacular picture! I have my HD cable box, Xbox 360, and DVD-1080P8 connected to the 3 HDMI ports and the TV recognizes the signals very quickly. The audio setup was simple for outputting to a 5.1 system through optical – turn off the TV speaker and voila. The LN40A550 also has a ton of setup options, but I really didn’t have to do much adjusting because the picture looked almost perfect out of the box. There are several settings for sports, cinema, and game that make viewing more enjoyable, also.

Overall, I give this Samsung 40″ LCD HDTV 5 stars. Get it, you won’t be disappointed!

**EDIT** The issues many people reported with HDMI connections to the Samsung DVD-1080P8 have not popped up and I have had this TV for over two weeks now. This was a previously known issue by Samsung, however, calling Samsung technical support will get you to a solution. They will mail a firmware update (not available online) to you and you will need to install this in your DVD player.

Great HDTV at great price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had the LN40A550 for over a month now, and though it’s only been in use for a week — so far so good. I did a lot of homework before purchasing this TV and it seemed that generally, Samsung’s Series 5,6 and 7 HDTVs receive some of the best overall reviews. Though I haven’t been able to fully take advantage of all its features, particularly the 1080p mode, I have used the unit with Comcast HDTV cable and also hooked it up to my laptop. I believe my HD channels come in at 1080i and the picture quality is great. The picture from the laptop also is amazing. I will be purchasing a Blu-ray player in the upcoming months to fully take advantage of the 1080p.

Many of the reviews on this TV unit complain about the sound. I’m a bit of sound system snob (for my car, PC, home theatre, etc) and these reviews and complaints about the sound on the LN40A550 are right… to a degree. What people have to understand is that in order to have a full rich sound, speakers need size and depth, which HDTVs do not allow due to their thin sizes. Bigger, deeper speakers (i.e. those found in old CRT units and external speakers) typically provide richer, fuller sounds. Simply think of the difference when comparing the sound that comes from a laptop to the sound that comes out of desktop computers with external speakers. When considering these facts, I’m actually pretty impressed by the sound this unit produces and don’t believe the complaints are justified. Furthermore, the unit provides multiple sound settings, and selecting the correct setting for what you are watching makes a significant difference. But I will be adding a home theatre system to really take advantage of the HDTV experience.

I am very satisfied with my purchase and hopefully, the product will be as reliable as everyone claims it to be, since I did not purchase the extended warranty. Though I have no other HDTVs to compare this to, I do highly recommend this unit.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I heavily researched this TV before purchasing it and I’m blown away by this model. The picture quality is amazing, especially through over-the-air digital TV. I mainly bought this TV to compliment my PS3 and games and blu-ray titles look absolutely stunning; the colors are incredibly rich and vibrant. I have external speakers hooked up to my TV for sound, so I don’t have much to say about the internal speakers. I also have to add that the white glove service was incredibly fast and I couldn’t be happier with CEVA’s service and consistent information on my TV’s tracking status. Delivery arrived much sooner than expected!

I have 3 Samsung Hi Def 1080P TV’s in my home. I wouldn’t own a different brand. Absolutely no trouble with the tv’s, the color, picture, and remotes are fine. My latest is the 40 inch 1080p LN40a550. No disappointment as usual. Great TV for the price and I know this TV will be trouble free as my other two Samsungs. When you compare tv’s, look at the contrast ratio’s. You will see Samsung far surpasses all the others. Buy this tv with confidence. You will be glad you did.

This is one beautiful TV. The price from Amazon was the best anywhere.

I shopped for months for not only the TV but price. I always thought I’d

buy a Sony. After reading reviews and doing my homework I decided on

the Samsung LN40A550. I could not be happier with my purchase and the

way Amazon handled the delivery. Straight to your door with free shipping.

Free set-up and a TV that delivers a superb HD picture. I am getting one

of the best pictures on planet earth. No regrets…except maybe I should

have bought a 46″ Samsung. I have had it for a month and you people

still considering a state of the art TV…buy Samsung..from Amazon.

Great Product with a bonus
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have owned this set for one month and have nothing but praise for it. I purchased this set from Amazon, and it was shipped quickly. The CEVA personnel unpacked and hooked it up. They waited while I inspected the set to make sure it worked properly and that there were no defective pixels. There weren’t any.

The picture is top notch. I recently visited a friend who had a new Sony HDTV. While the picture on his set was very nice, I did notice that the blacks seem much deeper on the Samsung. It seems to me, that the colors, in general, are a bit richer on the Samsung than they are on the Sony.

I have seen many comments complaining about the sound. If you’re expecting a top rate sound experience you might be disappointed. However, the sound on this set is better than on the set I replaced. Compared to my friend’s Sony, I didn’t notice any appreciable difference in the sound. Of course, that might be my old ears not being able to tell the difference. If I feel the need for better sound, I’ll purchase a sound system. I think most people who want the best sound experience do this anyway.

This set apparently has a built in QAM tuner. Although I have not seen it specifically stated that it has this feature, the owners manual states that you can receive HD-digital channels without a set-top box. What that means is you can receive non-scrambled HD digital channels having only a regular (non-digital) cable subscription. The number of channels will vary from area to area. Some providers may scramble all HD-digital channels. If this is the case, this feature will not work. In my area, the local channels are not scrambled and can be viewed in HD.

I was not aware of this fact when I purchased the set. I think others may also be surprised to learn this. So there you go, free HD. That’s a nice little bonus I did not expect.

Samsung LN40A550 LCD TV Review
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After looking around in a few of the big box stores, I was initially set on purchasing a Plasma flat panel TV, however, as soon as I saw this LCD TV, the clarity of picture was heads above anything else in it’s price point.

I am yet to upgrade to a Blu-Ray player although the HD content from my local cable provider (Comcast with HD box) is amazing. The NHL playoffs and seasonal baseball games look absolutely amazing. There is little to no noticeable picture blur, and the images are very sharp.

Up-converted DVD’s are a hit and miss scenario – IMHO, a lot of it depends on how good the original movie was shot, as some movies look great and other’s only have a slight improvement.

Some examples of one’s that look good are “Master & Commander” and “Star Wars 3 – Revenge Of The Sith”. Show’s like “Chappelle’s Show or even something like “Idiocracy” look ok – still watchable, but just ok.

Standard-def TV is the same as most regular DVD’s – watchable, but no where near HDTV. I’m almost at the point where I don’t watch regular-format TV anymore, if it’s not in HD, I generally will not watch it – it’s that much of a difference – especially MTV HD (mostly concerts on that channel and thankfully NOTHING like the regular MTV) and ESPN – Discovery HD is great, although History Channel is hit and miss – it seems to me that some of the shows are just upconverted and re-broadcast over the HDTV format.

The TV has a very nice piano-finish bezel, that is really not noticeable in 99.9% of most regular-viewing scenarios and IMO, adds to the look of the TV. Everyone that has seen this TV in my place has commented on how nice it looks and how GREAT the picture is.

The set was literally plug and play (I currently use it connected via the compnent cables which WILL run 1080i and there are upconverting DVD players available that run 1080p via component (web-search Kingwell), with all the colours looking great and the HD picture being very crisp and IMO, much better than anything else in it’s range.

Admittedly, it is a new TV (I’ve had it for about a month now), so I am not sure of the reliability, but time will tell. In any event, I highly recommend this TV for an “out of the box” great picture, without any of the hassles of Plasma.

NOTE – the white glove service of Amazon was also great and the set arrived days before it’s original ETA, which is always a nice surprise.

Highly recommended.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Have had the TV for a month now. Experience has been great so far. Delivery was timely and setup was done promptly. So far the performance of the TV has been immensely satisfying specially HD.

The only problem I’m having is – some of the DVDs I’m playing using my up converting Sony DVD player are producing bands on the top and bottom, even with 16:9 setup. Setting the p-size of the TV to ‘wide-fit’ fills the screen, but picture’s out of proportion.

Did the research, read the reviews – this is a great TV.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
When it comes to a big purchase like a new TV, I’m the type of person who likes to do lots of research to try and find the best product for the price.

After deciding the size (40-42″) and style (LCD), it came time to figure out which brand and model would wind up in my home. After reading countless write-ups and reviews (Amazon, Consumer Reports, Crutchfield) and going into stores to see actual TVs (An essential step if you ask me), I narrowed it down to the Samsung LN40A550 and the Sharp Aquos 42″. I ultimately went with the Samsung because the Sharp model was being discontinued. Also I figured at that point either one would do the job.

The purchase qualified for Amazon’s White Glove Delivery – which was awesome. I ordered on a Tuesday and it was delivered on Saturday. The guys brought it up three flights of stairs (the joys of NYC living), unboxed it and set it up on its stand.

Right from the get-go this TV was incredible. The picture is drop-dead gorgeous while watching HD Cable channels (Sunrise Earth anyone?) and even the image from my standard DVD player was very good. Sound is a little above average, but I hook it up through my stereo anyway.

I am totally satisfied with my Samsung LN40A550 and highly recommend it to anyone looking. Save yourself the trouble of researching and go for this one. If you do research though, I found the information on Consumer Reports to be invaluable, even if you do have to pay about $5 to access it.

For the price with free delivery, which has *ahem* come down since I purchased in January, you can’t beat it!

Great TV at a great price!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My fiance and I have had our LN40A550 for two weeks and we LOVE it! We didn’t buy it at Amazon (a local chain had it for $800 with in-store pickup, so we just did that — though the price now is equivalent of what we paid with tax), so I can’t speak for delivery or anything, but the TV itself is fantastic.

The next generation of sets will be out in June, so we wanted a set that could replace the busted rear-projector HDTV in our living room and then move to our bedroom when the new models come out in a few months. The Samsung A550 more than fits the bill. The picture quality is excellent — especially after using the AVS Forums settings and we love the design of the casing. We’ve got it on a stand right now, but will be buying the Peerless PA740 Articulating Wall Mount for 22-Inch to 40-Inch Flat Panel Displays (Gloss Black) in a few weeks and mounting it on the wall. Even without mounting, the swivel and having it at a slight angle gives us perfect viewing throughout the living room.

In a perfect world, the remote control could be configured to work with the receiver too — but that’s what the Logitech Harmony universal remote is for. We have HDTV, SD cable, an Apple TV and a standard DVD player attached right now — but we’ll be adding a Blu-Ray player next week. Unlike other commenters, I don’t think the SD signal looks bad — it just looks like SD TV. HD, of course, really shines. Play upconverted standard definition content through the Apple TV (running boxee) looks fantastic, and even on my older 5-disc DVD player, the the quality is really nice. Blacks are deep, etc. I can’t wait to hook up the Samsung BD-P2500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player and watch Netflix Instant-viewing in HD.

The built-in sound isn’t fantastic, but we hooked it up to our 7.1 system almost as soon as we got it. If you are going to use it in a living room and you don’t already have a surround system, look at investing in even a really inexpensive HTiB set-up, it’ll be a big improvement. It interfaces perfectly with our Denon receiver, even though it was the model year BEFORE HDMI started becoming standard (the AVR-1905). The optical out pumps all the surround sound signal to the receiver and we don’t miss anything.

For the price and the size, you can’t go wrong. When we bought ours at the store, it still had its original price tag from last summer, which was nearly double what we ended up paying. We almost bought a TV in December, but decided to wait because we were moving to a new place. We couldn’t be happier with what we ended up getting.

I was very disaaaponted in this TV. I had searched around for some time looking for a Samsung that provided an excellent picture and some extras, specifically Pict. In Pict. While this TV is advertised with this feature, it is never mentioned anywhere that it only works with an Analog signal. Now Analog signals are are no longer going to be available and in some cases they have already stopped transmitting them. I also contacted Samsung and their response was that is the way the set is designed. Also the function is buried about 3 layers down in the menu. Not very convenient. In addition the remote for this TV only works if you were directly in front of the set. Excellent picture but very poor sound.

I got this TV about a month ago and have nothing but good things to say about it. The other reviews are very accurate in what they had to say. The picture quality is outstanding. The delivery service was fantastic. In fact the only downside I’ve found with it so far is what has been mentioned before and that is that the IR sensor on the front of the TV is not very sensitive so you will need to be right in front of it to use the remote. Aside from that it really is a great TV and I would recommend it to anyone that is thinking about purchasing a new flat panel television.

I could not be happier with this wonderful TV. It is much nicer than I expected, especially for the price paid. I agree with other reviewers that the sound quality is lacking, but I had planned anyway to include an amplifier and auxillary speakers to enhance it. Even with fair speakers, it is WAY better than the 20 year old mono TV it replaced. The delivery suppled by Amazon through Pilot was perfect. The carriers arrived exactly on time, set up the TV with care and were polite and courteous. This beats the heck out of shopping in a store and bringing the TV home myself and setting it up. I ordered the tv on Jan. 3. I tried to track the item, but something was amiss. On Jan.19 I found out that paperwork and no product had been shipped, and I was supposed to be notified Jan.14! I re-ordered the tv and waited until Jan 29 for it to arrive (white glove). The delivery truck called when they were at the top of my drive, but because of the snow they told me to either reschedule delivery or pick it up myself (at the top of the drive) because they would not attempt to approach the house. I backed up to the truck and they put the box of the 40 inch tv in the back. I unpacked it and set it up myself. Jan 3-Jan29…an ordeal!

We are very happy with our new TV. It is even better than I expected. I didn’t know if people sitting to the side a bit would have a hard time seeing the image, but it is absolutely no problem. The only thing that seems a little different to me is that it doesn’t seem very bright. I set the brightness pretty high and the backlight pretty high, too, and that is what looks normal to me. It might be because I am not used to HDTV. When I saw this TV in the store, the picture was definitely better than the Sony of similar size.

Fantastic 40″ LCD TV
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After researching several other brands, we decided to go in for a 40″ Samsung LCD. It had superior picture quality over others and was at a much better price point ($$/inch) than Sony Bravia, which was the only other TV that came close in terms of quality.

Some of the reviews at Amazon are really great, please read them before you buy. Without going in to much details, THIS IS SIMPLY ONE OF THE BEST HDTVs out there!!

One thing we had a hard time deciding was between this model, the LN40A550 (60 Hz frame rate), and LN-T4069F (120 Hz frame rate). While at the store, we saw noticeable difference between them. The LN-T4069F had smoother image transitions due to its higher frame rate and a nicer picture rendering. But we decided to go in for LN40A550 (about ~$400 cheaper, a better contrast ratio, and moreover we hadn’t seen any user reviews for this newer model). But it’s something to consider if you are in the market, especially if they drop the prices.

My techie brother and another work-friend both chose Samsung LCD. I followed their choice.

Very happy.

Customer support [the remote conked out] was as good as I’ve ever had. Price was better than retailer “specials,” including Sam’s Club.

I save $75 in sales tax through Amazon.

Others have experience problems with deliveries, but my delivery and setup was quick and efficient.

Amazon is on its way to becoming the next Wal-mart.

Great TV – not entirely happy with the delivery service
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
First let me say the TV is incredible! I have hooked it up to my cable box via HDMI and the picture is perfect! I’ve also hooked up my Wii HD and have hooked my laptop into it which you can view at extremely high resolution.

My problem was mostly with the delivery service and the “white glove” gaurantee. Let me start by saying that luckily there was no problem with the TV regarding pixels. However, when it was delivered, they barely brought it in and then just left. They are SUPPOSED TO help you set it up and go over the screen with you to make sure all the pixels were working before they left. That was my major problem with the TV.

I replaced my 37″ Olevia with this Samsung model and after one month, have been extremely pleased.

1) The LCD screen is vibrant and sharp, using a progressive scan up-converting DVD player or HDTV broadcasts. I haven’t felt the need to invest in Blue-ray yet as I am completely satisfied with my current picture.

2) The DTV tuner works much better than the old Olevia (I use a simple rabbit ears to pull in crystal clear HDTV broadcasts).

3) Channels change quickly, though it is good to go through and siphon out unwanted TV stations from the channel list after scanning as this box will pick up a few dozen digital broadcast TV stations.

4) The delivery service that Amazon contracts carried the box in, set it up, and verified that it works, quickly and without problem.

5) The HDMI connection works great with both my Sony and Denon up-converting DVD players. I’ve tried both.

Wonderful TV!! Great Service from Amazon and Pilot Delivery
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I ordered the TV on a Friday and received it the following Tuesday. The delivery company is great…Ken patiently waited while I was delayed in getting home by a slow train. He was not in a hurry to leave and made sure I had no questions or concerns before he left.

This is my first large order from Amazon. The 40″ fit perfectly in my 41″ width cabinet.I have cable and the coaxial cable hook up is satisfactory, but I think I’m going to get the HD box in order to get the best picture. However, the current picture is amazing. The sound/audio is very good, no complaints.

I strongly recommend ordering this TV from Amazon, even if you live in a tiny town far from a big city. I was most concerned about delivery and set up, there was no need for concern,it was perfect!

Thank you for making this so easy.

3/31/09: Added HD box and the picture and sound improved dramatically, it’s amazing. WOW!

Re: Samsung 1080p8 Upscaling DVD player compatability
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I recently purchased the LN40A550 and the 1080p8 Upscaling DVD player. Unlike the post below, I haven’t had any problems in relation to the Anynet signal appearing every couple of minutes. I plugged in the DVD player into the HDMI 2 jack, put in a DVD, and immediately started watching. I’ve heard of some issues with the TV and needing additional firmware, but so far I haven’t needed it. I’ve had my TV for three weeks now and have never had a problem with the DVD player losing a signal or connection.

I narrowed my choices between the Sony and the Samsung and thought the Samsung outperformed the Sony. Sony tends to create a picture that is extremely soft, much like the look in the movie theatres. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but I tend like more crispness and definition.

Samsung LN40A550 LCD
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve exhaustively researched LCD TV’s for the better part of two years. The prices have finally leveled off, and Samsung has pretty much risen to the top as far as value, quality of picture and overall ease of use. I’ve had the LN40A550 for about a month now and can’t be happier. The picture is beautiful especially in HD and DVD’s. Standard TV is a little degraded which is expected but by no means any big deal at all. If you can subscribe to an HD service, DO IT!!, it’s amazing. I listened through TV’s speakers initially and was impressed with sound quality, so if your not hell bent on total home theater experience you’ll be very happy with stock TV speakers. Don’t really see the need for 120Hz, I’ve seen no motion issues at all and I watch a lot of sports (Olympics in HD have been unreal). Overall it’s hard to find anything bad to say about this TV, you won’t be disappointed!!

Great LCD perfect picture but lacks on sound
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
On a overall this is a great 1080p lcd tv. The picture is top notch like all of samsung tv’s it has plenty of hdmi inputs and a great remote and instruction manual. My only complaint with this model is the sound from the tv itself is a bit tinny and lacks depth. This can be improved through the on screen menu for those who do not have a home theater surround system.

This tv though does make you feel you need to purchase a home theater system to fully enjoy it though. I have bought 3 different models of lcd’s from samsung and I have not been disappointed with any of them. It’s just as the saying goes the better the model the better the quality and features in such cases as this one.

Like my higher model of this one but 46 inches and my other one has the touch of red color also you need to download the newest firmware to a usb drive and plug it in the usb port on the lcd and upgrade the firmware. Outside of that the Samsung lcd’s are top notch and amazon stands by the products and are very helpful.

Plus online buying is much cheaper than going to the big box stores that charge you more for items like this to offset their overhead.

Fantastic TV!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After much research, I decided on this TV. I ordered from Amazon on 4/30 with an est delivery date of 5/9 and, CEVA delivered it on 5/7 (free white glove service). The TV has a fantastic picture, TV’s setup/config is very intuitive, and the sound is surprisingly good for a 10wx2 TV speaker system. There are plenty of connections, too. Currently the devices I’ve connected to the TV are a cable HD/DVR via HDMI, a progressive scan DVD player via component video, and a ReplayTV 5040 DVR via component video. I’ve routed the TV sound out to my Denon amp, even though it’s standard stereo. My only real criticism, and a minor one at that, is the size of the remote which initially seems *huge*! I’m quickly getting used to it though, as the layout is quite intuitive. The remote is also backlit, a real plus when watching in a dark room!

When researching HDTVs, I also considered the 650 and 750 series and compared all to Sony LCDs, but I found the picture on the Samsungs to be *much* better. Although I would have liked an ethernet connection (on the 750 series), I really didn’t want the high-gloss planels on the 650 and 750 series. (My viewing room is quite bright during the day, and although the glossy LCDs do seem to have an improved picture quality, the added glare turns that into a big negative for me.) Initially I intended to go for a 120Hz set, but as I did more research, I decided that was a feature I could forgo. The HD picture from the cable box is phenomenal. I notice no ghosting, graininess or pixelation. Even standard def (stretched) is fine to watch. I expect HDMI-CEC will be a very handy feature as I upgrade components down the road, but for now, I’m unable to make use of it.

In sum, I’m very, very pleased with this TV, with CEVA’s white glove delivery service, the price I paid, and the 12-month no interest deal I got using Amazon’s credit card. I would definitely buy this TV again and have already recommended it to friends who are currently HDTV shopping.

It has an awesome picture and great sound for my expectations. The only minor complaint I have about this TV is with the remote. You have to point the remote right at the “eye” of the TV in the lower right hand corner or else it wont pick up the signal. Kinda annoying but so what now I have to move my hand a cm to point directly at the “eye”….no big deal.

First off, I have to congratulate Amazon on their prompt and superb (I repeat-SUPERB) service. TV came earlier than the earliest projected delivery date, and the delivery man helped me up to the third floor and offered to set it up. He even refused the tip!

TV was perfect. No dead pixels/screen cracks/anything. The clarity is incredible. The size is also larger than I anticipated. I’m actually on my PC (which I now have multiple monitors on, thanks to a DVI to HDMI converter [also bought on Amazon]) writing this review. The setup was painless and it automatically detected all available channels. The speakers aren’t that bad unless you’re audio-obsessed. I’m going to hook the TV up to my surround sound when those cables come in the mail.

I have a Wii and PS3 hooked up to it. Both look absolutely outstanding via the HDMI cable for the PS3 and component cables for the Wii (yet again, also ordered on Amazon).

The blacks are deep and the color is acute on every source I’ve tried. The panel is clear and the frame is not distracting like some of the Touch of Colors can be. The remote is responsive and feels well-constructed (comes with batteries included). Personally, I don’t like 120 hz because it kind of just hurts my brain to look at it, so I saved money and am happy with the results.

This is a great buy… so buy it.

The BEST HD Starts Here!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After reviewing several dozen reviews on the best selling 1080P HD TVs I went over to Best Buy and watched them and compared them in person. Sure enough, this TV, in the 40 in and 46 inch sizes had the clearest, sharpest, brightest, most amazing picture quality I’ve ever seen. I wondered if I should step up and pay another $500 for the “red” series TVs with supposedly better contrast ratios and refresh rates, etc. but wanting to keep my purchase price around $1200 or so I went with this TV and now I’m so glad I did! This TV has plenty of contrast and speed and even the standard speakers on the TV excellent. My TV arrived in 6 days from the time I placed my order with Amazon and it was carefully delivered to my home with a appt. set up by CEVA shipping. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS TV! The best I’ve seen at any price or size. Just get it! You won’t be disappointed! But if you really want to see what this TV can do you will want to also get a Blu-ray player and a copy of the BBS video Planet Earth. Absolutely astounding! Go for it!

Bought this TV last week after doing a daily search for four weeks to pick the best one in the 40″ catagory (the upper limit for our room size/ratio – and I’m an aerospace engineer, so performance and specs matter). This Samsung blows all the others away. Second would be the Sony Bravia series. Everything is easy to use and intuitive. Picture is excellent – everything as advertised. Would buy one for everyone I know if I could. Amazon price is the best also. If you want a 40″ you must have this one. You won’t be disappointed!

Awesome picture, warranty service disappointing
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
After months of looking at a variety of LCD tvs to replace my Sony XBR CRT, Samsung was the clear choice due to the phenomenal picture and great price-value equation. The television is great, but I have knocked off two stars due to delivery and warranty service problems.

I have mixed feelings about the delivery by Ceva. Six days after placing my order, the Ceva dispatcher called to schedule delivery. Unfortunately, the “local” (actually based in another county) Ceva only offers two options each week for deliveries, between 10am and 2pm on Monday or Wednesday. I had important client conference calls scheduled at 10:30a.m. on both those days and asked the dispatcher to put a note requesting delivery after Noon. She refused to do so. Ultimately I had to wait an additional week for delivery due to their limited options for delivery windows. While I understand and am used to delivery “windows”,to only offer delivery during two timeframes a week does not give you many options. Once the driver called me to get directions,he was very flexible and in fact made the delivery on a Tuesday, which the dispatcher had insisted was not possible.

After 5 weeks of enjoying my new LCD, suddenly it stopped working (had power, but no picture and no chimes). I went through all the trouble-shooting steps then called Samsung, who said they would schedule a service call. The Samsung rep also gave me the name and phone # of the designated repair facility and recommended I call them myself, which I did the following day.

The earliest appt.they could give me for repair was more than a week away. We scheduled the repair for a Friday and I arranged to work from home that day. At 11 am,the dispatcher called to tell me they were canceling the repair appt.because the part they suspected was the problem (power supply) had not arrived from Samsung. Even worse, they said that Samsung was backordered on those parts and could not provide an estimate of when more would be available!!!! She said she had a dozen other appts.to cancel that day for the same thing.

So I waited another week. Finally I received a call from the repairman letting me know he was on the way to my house. No one had notified me in advance so I left work to meet him there. Once the repairman arrived,he repaired the tv (turns out it was the main board) quickly and efficiently.

Overall summary:

- GREAT television picture and beautiful set at an excellent price

- Many have complained about the sound, but I adjusted the audio settings based on the recommendations at the AVSforum, which made a significant improvement. Also sounds great running through my Sonos system and external speakers.

- Scheduling inflexibility by Ceva and the Ceva dispatcher’s attitude did not feel like “white glove”service to me. The attitude and professionalism of the deliveryman, once we were put in direct contact, was great

- The local repair service was friendly, although communications could have been better.

- Samsung’s inability to communicate when they would have more power supplies available is unacceptable. From what the repair service said,it sounds as if they’re having to replace a lot of power supplies on these tvs. However, since it turned out to be a completely different part that required replacement, the repair service should have kept our original appt. Their “guessing” delayed the repair by a week.

- The fact that the main board failed after only a few weeks of use concerns me….

-All that said, the tv repairman said the A550 is the model he is planning to buy.

I would just like to say that this is the first product of any kind that I purchased on amazon.com. I read the reviews, both positive and negative, and have come away amazingly impressed with this television!

I received it two days ahead of the estimated delivery date, and was able to set up my xbox360, ps3, and wii with ease (yes, I am a game-geek.) I have read that the built-in speakers aren’t the best, or worse, that they are dreadful. I would have to say that they are pretty decent for the size and positioning of them. I, however, use a separate audio receiver so it was a non-issue for me.

I was able to scan antenna and cable right out of the box and get over a dozen free HD stations! This is truly a fantastic TV.

Since comcast had no hdmi box in stock ,i went with component hook up and picture is fantastic. I also have a 32 ” sharp from 2006 ,but the sharp sound blows the samsung away. Samsungs sound is very tinny, and you really cant exceed the volumn level,as it will cause distortion. Now,that said, after a few minutes you really forget about the sound issues ,unless your listening to a concert, etc. Price wise;you cant beat amazon. Pc richards,c.city , both were 250-300$ more. Review from College Student just Starting Work
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I am a recent college graduate starting work this fall. I wanted a good quality LCD tv that would last me for the next decade or so, without breaking my little piggy bank.

Price Paid: $820 + tax from Amazon

Duration I’ve Had TV: 2 months

PROs:

*Swivel on TV has a very generous range, which is great for me since I have it in my bedroom and can watch TV from my bed, desk chair, or futon by simply rotating the TV.

*Picture Quality: I cannot ask for more from the picture quality. In particular, the color and contrast are amazing and stunning.

*Tweaking ability: For those of you who really want to have the most accurate picture quality, this Samsung model lets you tweak everything you need to professional calibrate it. You can google for calibration settings for this model from professionals and then set your TV to these settings and know you have a calibrated TV. You can also use any THX DVD movie you have and goto extra features for the THX calibration on video and sound (e.g. Monsters Inc DVD, Cars DVD, Pirate of Carribean DVD).

*Channel Surfing speed: Some LCD tvs take forever to change the channel, not with this model. it is swift. not as fast on my SONY lcd, but fast enough such that you can switch channels without being frustrated at all.

*Remote: Samsung has the best remote i have ever seen on a tv. The keys are large and spaced out and intuitive. Also, there is a button on the top that you can press that turns on the light for the keys, which is great! Backlit keys for night time movie watching is amazing!

*WiseLink: You can plug into its USB port a camera/jump drive, etc. and it will play a slide show of your pictures and music. Pictures look stunning! A little slow sometimes to read large picture files off plugged in camera, but def bearable.

Cons:

*Standard Definition channels look like crap on this TV. I have a 6 year old Sony rear projection TV downstairs that processed standard def so much better than this TV. This TV makes standard def. shows look like cell phone clips (quality wise). This would be my biggest gripe on this TV: standard def. sucks so badly.

* PIP does not support 2 TV channels (i dont know anybody who would use PIP the way it’s setup on this TV; you can only do PIP with another source like PC input with TV. awkward).

* Speakers are decent but don’t get nearly loud enough for parties or anything beyond personal movie watching. Def. invest in a soundbar or some simple home theater system if you take sound seriously.

* Turning the TV on is a little slower than I would like. It needs about 3-5 seconds to fully turn on, and sometimes I’m not sure if i’ve activated it or not.

* Remote must be pointed pretty darn straight at the IR port in order for it to process the signal. Not too annoying but wish they had a more liberal IR range.

* USB WiseLink works great for pictures but this model does not support Movies thru its USB port! Need to buy their step-up model to get the movie support on wiselink. I tried to do a firmware update, but there isn’t a hack for updating the wiselink to the movie version. May need to buy a WD TV or something to get that movie experience.

EXCELLENT PRODUCT EXCEPT FOR FINANCING!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Over the 4th of July holiday, Amazon.com offered a 36-month (No Interest) promotion for various HDTV’s including this model. In the August 2008 CONSUMER REPORT, this model (Model 550) received top ratings for overall performance and superb picture quality. With the enticement of the CONSUMER REPORT review; the ability to pay the unit off over three years, No Interest; and being able to watch the Olympics on a 40″ screen, I was hooked.

I rated this product with only 4 stars primarily due to the financing promotion because I wish to point out that the 36 (or 24 or 12 month) promotion payment plan is not what it appears. I presumed that the final cost of the unit would be divided into 36 equal payments over the designated period. When I received my first statement I found that logic to be false. The Amazon.com Store Card is issued by GE Money. They bill in the following manner: 1/24th of the open balance as a minimum payment each month. That means that for whatever promotional time frame you sign up, THERE WILL BE NO EQUAL PAYMENTS! You will be paying much more in the first year of ownership than an equal payment would have cost. Also be aware: After 36 months of minimum payments (or 24 or 12), as a result of this calculation method, you will NOT have paid off the television. I did an Excel spreadsheet and found that after 36 months I still owe $237 for the HDTV. That means if you don’t pay it off totally in the 36th payment, all of the hefty finance charges will be added to your 37th month statement! The 1/24th method of calculation was NOT explained when I signed up for the credit card. Regardless, I still think that the deal is great….but the payment structure should have been explained.

Inasmuch as this is my first HDTV. I was delighted to find that it was a superb purchase decision. I agree with most of the Amazon reviews regarding the unit. Especially the fact that at a louder volume, the 10 watt speakers tend to vibrate and give a high pitched sound. You should consider a surround system so that you truly get the best out of this television. (My next purchase). DVD’s are awesome! And at this size screen, even letterbox looks great. I also like the inclusion of a USB port for the use of showing digital photographs right off the camera. I have always been impressed with Samsung products and this HDTV is no exception. I compared the 40″ size at some retail stores with units from other manufacturers and found there was no comparison in quality of picture.

If you want the best LCD HDTV viewing, buy Samsung. I should mention that I live in the Chicagoland area and receive my picture signal through a regular airwaves antenna. The High Def signals are unbelievable. No need to subscribe to any cable or satellite services.

The opening ceremonies of the Olympics last night were terrific on the HDTV.

I was greatly pleased with the white glove service and how soon after I placed the order that the local delivery company phoned me to deliver my tv the next day. The television setup was quick and easy, pretty much just turn it on. The picture with my satellite receiver (not HD) is wonderful, and crystal clear. For Christmas the family purchased a Sony Playstation 3 (again off of Amazon). The picture using the HDMI input is amazing! We played a movie the other day using the Ps3 and were blown away by the clarity of the picture. I rated this item a 5 star because of the brilliant picture quality; however, if I have one complaint it would be the sound is not as loud as I would want it to be, but really it is not that much of an issue. Other reviewers also mentioned the sound, but as I’ve said it is not a huge deal and it does not affect my giving it a 5 star.

Exceeded Our Expectations
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
A great TV for a really reasonable price. We couldn’t be happier with the picture quality, ease of use, and simple set-up. This is a bedroom TV that sits perpendicular to a large, 3-paned glass slide and opposite two very large windows and yet the picture has no glare in full Florida sun. Our only complaint is that the TV’s speakers produce very poor sound quality. We remedied that problem by hooking the TV to a small Onkyo receiver with Bose speakers and the sound is now terrific. We waited 7 months to write a review to see what problems might develop and there have been absolutely none. A great set for the money with an outstanding picture.

Set up was easy, Amazon service excellent. but most important the picture quality on the 40-in. screen is astonishing. Exceeds performence of my older 26-in. Samsung I got more than 2 years ago. Only peculiarity is that I must keep TV on when playing CDs through my DVD player. Minor issue. I think this TV rocks!

Sports have NEVER looked so good, even live! The Samsung is living up to the excellent reviews with these exceptions: the sound is not good, so I purchased a pair of speakers which make a huge difference. Also, if you’re not looking at the picture from right in front, the color looks washed out, but I understand that goes with lcd (vs plasma). I originally looked at 32″ and 37″, coming from an old-fashioned 27″ analog model, but I’m glad I stepped up to the 40″–the perfect size for the room and the distance to the sitting area.

Love the TV, delivery not so much.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is the second Samsung LCD TV I’ve ordered from Amazon in the last year. The TV is fantastic. Beautiful color, clarity. Since it’s a bedroom TV, sound quality is not so important, although I think it’s just fine. The “white glove” delivery was anything but. The TV was merely dropped off in another bedroom, box and all…and then they left. No taking it out of the box, plugging it in or taking the packaging away.

We have had our Samsung 550 for just over two weeks now and are very satisfied. The delivery was excellent with great help setting it up in our family room.

We use cable and are still adjusting to the dual remotes since we control the picture with the Samsung remote and the channels and sound with our cable remote.

It is the best deal we have seen for this model.

Consumer Reports was right…Very nice TV
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Very nice TV, however sound quality is not great which I am aware is par for LCD TVs, except for perhaps the new 630 model which is said to have better sound quality. I was worried about reflection, having lots of windows and sun in my passive solar home and watching most of my TV in the daylight hours….but no problem. It is far better than my old analog In which I had to pull blinds, etc, before I could watch a movie. I am disappointed in the blurring affect when watching sports…movement….however I read that this is common in LCD’s and that plasma’s are better for sports. Unfortunately, that is mainly what I watch, however I am getting used to it and it is not that big of a deal. I am also picking up many more channels off of my cable than before….music channels, etc. Don’t know what will happen when they shut down analog broadcast this month but for now, very nice indeed!

To my amazement, Amazon had the best price and we did not have to wait for a sale ( we had not had a tv to watch since the early spring). It arrived in great shape, the delivery men were nice and polite and set it right in my living room. It it truely a great picture and we are well pleased. I would recommend Samsung to anyone. Very Nice TV, White Glove Service not so great.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am on week one of my TV and am very pleased. I upgraded from a 27″ crt model and the difference just knocks you out. On recommendation of a friend I watched some Discovery Channel HD programming. All I can say is “WOW!”

Everyone else has pretty much said what needs to be said, but I do have one comment. I saw a review where someone mentioned getting an $11 HDMI cable.

Folks, if you are going to spend this kind of money on a TV, why be cheap with the cable? Go ahead and spend a little extra to get the 10g monster cable. You wouldn’t buy a new porsche and put a honda civic transmission in. Would you?

The only negative I have about this purchase is the white glove delivery service. The tracking info had my TV scheduled for June 11 delivery. I expected to get a call on June 10 to schedule a time. Instead, the TV showed up unannounced on the 10th. It was just lucky someone was home at the time. And then the guys just plopped the box down in the livinging room and left. No unpacking, no taking the garbage away.

I of course called Amazon. The first person I talked to about it thanked me for telling them, but made no offer of a rebate. I didn’t pursue the matter with her because I wanted to wait until I got the tv unpacked and set up, so I would know if there were any problems. My next call was made that night and I was told I’d have to call back during the day. That surprised me, I had never run into that with Amazon before.

Finally I talked to a guy the next day who at first didn’t seem to understand why I was dissatisfied. I told him that the white glove delivery is supposed to be part of the service. He told me I should keep the box for at least 30 days in case there was a problem. I tried to tell him that if the delivery service did their job correctly I wouldn’t have the box anyway. That logic seemed to escape him.

But he did pass the report on to someone else and a couple days later I got an email telling me I had a $30 credit.

I’m not sure I feel totally recompensed for my trouble, but it was something.

So the moral is. The TV is great, but don’t count on the white glove people to do their job.

I was greatly impressed until I was unable to get the Closed Caption feature working when playing DVDs. I then checked the User Manual, page 56, and sure enough it says “The caption feature doesn’t work in Component, HDMI or PC modes.” If this is essential for you, look further. Consumer Reports didn’t mention this limitation.

Can’t Go Wrong
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
It’s an amazing TV and is probably the best value in its price range, especially at Amazon’s price. The screen is crisp and bright even in daylight. I did a little picture tuning using the free tool available on any THX certified DVD and am impressed with the picture quality and color clarity. The first HD feed I tuned into was the animated movie Flushed Away on HBO. I wouldn’t normally watch something like that, but I was completely blown away by the picture and was glued still. I can’t believe how good the HD feeds look.

This replaced a 32″ Sony WEGA Trinitron KV-32FS100 tube TV, which had an excellent picture for a non-HD set. I was worried that when watching regular non-HD 4:3 broadcasts the picture would be smaller than it was on my Sony (I refuse to watch 4:3 broadcasts stretched out to 16:9) and that the picture would look worse. It turns out that when watching 4:3 broadcasts the picture size is roughly 33″, but the Sony tube TV had a slightly better picture for non-HD content (a common issue for LCD TVs).

Other Considerations:

* 40″ looks much bigger at home than it does at the store. Trust me.

* Use HDMI cables for the best quality picture. I ordered $10 HDMI cables (6 foot) here at Amazon and have had no problems with HD feeds or playing xbox360 at 1080p. Buy the cables here, don’t pay more than $10 each and certainly don’t go to the big blue store where the cheapest 6 foot cable is $60. Yes, interference can cause problems even for a digital signal, but at 6 feet give me a break. You won’t need a gas-injected, diamond-encrusted, NASA-certified cable.

* My cable provider charged me an extra $8/month to receive a group of about 10 HD channels such as ESPN, Discovery, TNT, etc. At least the major networks’ HD channels were not extra. Check with your provider to see if you will be paying extra for certain HD channels.

* The built in speakers are nothing special, but then again so are most built in TV speakers.

* Amazon comes through again. Unbeatable price with free shipping. I ordered it on a Sunday and received it Thursday; not bad for free shipping (granted it only went from Reno to southern California). The delivery guys even offered to set it up for free, but I declined. I don’t know if that’s standard operating procedure for CEVA, but it’s probably worth tipping them if you don’t want to set it up yourself.

I did a lot of research before buying this TV and can honestly say I’m very happy with the purchase. Given other reviews I was a bit worried about the sound quality, but the sound is excellent through the TV speakers alone. Everything else: picture quality, menu functions and setup, remote, etc. are superb. And Amazon’s price beat every other on-line quote.

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Got this TV delivered yesterday via the ‘White Glove’ service and have been amazed at the picture. VERY easy to set up w/ my digital cable via HDMI cable and have been VERY pleased with the performance so far using the factory settings. I used component connections for my older DVD-R and it displayed a very nice, crisp picture despite only being a 480p source.

The only complaint I have with it is that the stand does not raise the LCD up enough (~3/4 of an inch) to clear the digital cable box and DVD player on the antique piece of furniture we chose to place it on. I would recommend this set to anyone.

I’ve owned a 1080i samsung television (LNS4041) for approximately 2 years now. After fifteen months of operation the thing went on the fritz (turn it on and purple and green vertical lines appear with a black background – no pic.). Samsung claims I’m a few days outside my warranty and won’t back up the product. I’ve called to have it repaired and it will cost $130 just to have somebody look at it. I’m thinking about smashing it into tiny bits an posting the video on YouTube. Overall, I’m very disappointed in samsung and regret the purchase. If you must have this television, buy the extended warranty. As for me, I’m getting my next lcd at Wal-Mart – perhaps a sanyo.

I’m In HD Heaven!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Just a little over two hours with my LN40A550 and words don’t do the experience justice . . . but I’ll try anyway. Stunning definition, brilliant color, amazingly easy to set-up and calibrate and purchasing from Amazon.com was a true pleasure.

First, about the buying experience. I was initially hesitant to spend a large amount of money on such an important purchase. But with the lowest price anywhere on the TV, a Blu-ray player for less than half the list price, a $200 gift certificate for sports memorabilia and no taxes to pay, I saved over $700 compared to getting the same set-up a my local brick and mortar store. My deliveries (three separate shipments including an HDMI cable) took about a week and everything arrived in good condition. While Amazon and CEVA phone reps were all extremely helpful, the local delivery guys here in Las Vegas (City Cargo) couldn’t wait to leave after getting the TV plugged in and turned on. Fortunately I read a ton of stuff online so getting everything up and running was pretty simple.

I’m currently using Cox Cable but DirecTV is installing tomorrow so I’ll have at least twice as many HD choices. The HD picture quality was very good right out of the box but with a few tweaks it is truly amazing. I found some good calibration suggestions at AVS Forum (see the Official Samsung LNxxA550 thread post #995). The clarity and depth is outstanding and the range and intensity of the color is as good as any plasma I’ve seen. I’m finding myself watching channels I’d usually not watch just because the picture is so good. When I finish this review, I’ll pop-in a Blu-ray movie, which, based on everything I’ve seen and heard will be even better. Standard Def is less than perfect but I really believe that that’s as much an optical illusion effect as anything. When you’re seeing an HD picture with such incredible quality, an SD picture just looks that much worse in comparison.

As for the sound issues I keep hearing about, external audio is the easy fix. I just took the stereo output from the TV to my trusty old Aiwa bookshelf system and it sounds awesome. I’ve seen suggestions from plugging a set of small speakers in the headphone jack, to expensive component 5.1 HT systems, but if you spend a grand or so on this TV do yourself a favor and get some kind of external audio.

I’m so glad I decided on this set and chose to buy from Amazon.com. If you are reading this thread, struggling with all of the choices like I did before making the decision, I have three words.

Just do it.

A Really Outstanding 40″ LCD TV
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I selected this Samsung LCD TV over the other Samsung 40″ TVs because of it has the highest resolution, 1080p, the contrast ratio of 30,000 which gives the best, crisp colors and the refresh rate of 5 ms to show uninterrupted motion. I was tempted by the LN40A650 which has a 4 ms refresh rate but only a 20,000 contrast ratio. I looked at both in a local TV store and decided on the LN40A550. It was also a little less expensive.

Amazon’s delivery and installation was outstanding. CAVA not only moved the Samsung into my family room, but installed it and helped me move the old CRT to my car for a trip to the recycling center. Truely a exceptional experience.

Great price, early delivery, fantastic product!

Going from my old standard definition tv to this high definition tv, is like going from a black & white tv to a color tv. It is that much better!

Based on what I had read, my only hesitation was around audio quality. Consider that a non-issue. The sound is great! If you are an audiophile and want superb sound then you can connect it to your audio system, otherwise the built in speakers are great!

Enjoy your purchase.

What else can be said?
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
There’s not much detail I can add to what’s already been written, so I’ll just add one more ‘5 star’ review, and a few brief/random thoughts.

Like several other reviewers here, I did quite a bit of big-box store shopping before ordering this unit. I’m pretty particular about my electronics, so I feel I made the best choice with this model. Sony has some catching up to do now. ;-)

After watching BBC’s Planet Earth Series on a standard def TV, and then finally getting to experience it on this TV, I finally understand all the praise over HD. In a word, S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G.

The built in speakers are terrible; very anemic and tinny. In this day and age, most folks are setting up with audio equipment, so, I guess the built-in speakers are for the most part, going to be overlooked.

Another complaint to lodge, but not the fault of the TV: standard def cable picture is awful; blurry and over saturated. Some channels look fine, most are less-than-pleasing. I’m starting to get accustomed to it, but overall, YUK.

FYI: You can bypass your SD cable box to get over-the-air HD channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc)–just connect the cable directly to the TV. I get about 8 HD channels on Comcast. I also get pay-per-views and on-demand people are watching in my neighborhood on the upper channels. BONUS!

It’s great. I love it and recommend it to everyone.

Fantastic TV for the price!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I just purchased this TV @ $799.00. I did my homework and I wanted to find a decent HDTV that would provide reliability and functionality at under $1000. I was torn between this model and a Sony that was $999. I’ve always been a loyal Sony buyer and they have never let me down. They are expensive, but I figure you get what you pay for. Until I found out Samsung makes the MAC display screens. That changed my mind about Samsungs.

So given the price I went ahead and jumped. I’m really happy with my decision. Overall this is a great value for the money. Here are some pros and cons I found, but the pros outweigh the cons:

PROS: Excellent picture even with a regular cable box. I have Time Warner Cable, but I’ve been too lazy to exchange my regular cable box for an HDTV cable box. I can’t really say I will either because I can still pick up channels that broadcast an HD signal, like HBO HD or basic’s like TNT HD. They look great!! So I’m not really in any rush to upgrade just yet. Plenty of additional inputs/outputs. The factory settings out of the box need tweeking however, but once you mess with the settings, picture looks incredible. The size is PERFECT for a bedroom or a smaller living room. My living room is small, but the size was just right. I have my xbox 360 hooked up via HDMI – OMG – it looks AMAZING! Totally worth the cash to buy the additional cable. Also – the swivel stand it comes with is very convenient if you want to sit in different places away from the TV.

CONS: Sound is horrible relatively speaking. It’s okay if you really don’t care about bass, but I have to be honest here…even after messing with the settings, the TV has the sound of a clock radio. Seriously. BUT – if you are like me and have your TV hooked up to a decent surround sound system, NO WORRIES. The TV’s speakers are irrelevant. However, if you don’t want to upgrade to surround sound, I would go with the more expensive SONY set. Sony’s have better speakers.

For the price – the TV is a value and a great starter LCD HDTV.I will probably upgrade in a few years, but for anyone wanting to go from a small TUBE TV to HDTV this is the TV for you. Just be aware the sound isn’t great.

Highly recommend.

After reading all the horrid shipping reviews, I was hesitant to order it and have it shipped via CEVA/EGL, but Amazon had the best price, so I decided to go for it. Had issues setting up a time with CEVA, and their online tracker just says nonsense. After 2 weeks it finally arrived…with the right side smashed and the bottom frame hanging loose. Refused delivery with CEVA and they reluctantly took it back. Amazon customer service has been helpful but it still doesn’t change the fact that it will now take over a month for me to get this by the time the next one arrives. Hopefully it will be in one piece.

Everything went smooth and the TV was delivered about a day later than expected. “White Glove” delivery was made by CEVA directly to my door. It was unpacked and set up on my entertainment center cabinet, cables hooked up and turned on by the person delivering it. All done very quickly and professionally. So far I am pleased with this Samsung TV except that I am disappointed that the ANYNET+ is not compatible with the ANYNET on my older model Samsung Home Entertainment (means I can’t use the same remote to control both pieces). That is the only reason for the 4 star rating instead of 5 stars.

Bought this unit on New years Day 1/1/09 at Circuit City for $999 and got the warrany through Squaretrade for $80 dont pay the big stores for an overprice warranty when Squaretrade give you in home service for large items like this.

Perfect picture quality with Sony PS3 and Bluray titles. Any game rendered in 1080p will look stunning!!!! I do caution you that the regular cable input will make the set look like garbage. When you set up the unit let it go though its auto channel set up. It takes a good 20 mins to go through. There is also a noise reduction feature for the picture that I think is set to auto. Make sure it is on the max setting. It improved the picture dramatically.

Very happy with the unit. My budget was $1000 or I would have got a 42 or 46 inch :) :( Anything larger that 40 inches can be harder to find a really nice wall unit.

I ordered on a Friday morning, recieved the TV via Pilot Air frieght on the following Tuesday. Delivery was no-hassle and on time. TV looks good out of box after i did some tweaking (thanks AVS Forums!). I got this deal when Amazon briefly lowered the price so it was a hell of a deal.

I did a lot of research before buying a TV, and this one had great reviews on Cnet and various other sites. One thing i found out later was that Samsung sends these reviewers panels that are made in the Samsung factory called “S” panels. These are usually far superior to the panels that Samsung outsources to third parties, “C” and “A” panels. Sadly I got a “C” panel, and it definaltey doesnt have the clarity of the “S” panel on display at Costco. While I got a great deal on this TV, and the picture is still good and I’m happy with the purchase, I’ll probably not buy another Samsung TV because of this issue. Its basically a crapshoot on what kind of panel you’ll get, and no way to tell until you take the TV out of the box.

If you’re on the fence about the LN40a550 vs. TV X i would go to Youtube and search “S” panel vs “C” panel and look at the demo that was created and you get the idea.

Shipping nightmare
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
No matter what others say, I truly think shipment is a vital component of an online purchase.

I ordered my TV on 12/2. Amazon’s so-called “white glove delivery service” states that I would be contacted within 5 days to arrange delivery. It’s been 13 days with no phone call from them, although I’ve called them 3 times with no success on getting a delivery date.

CEVA was their shipper of choice–I live in Illinois and the TV shipped from Indiana. I just deciphered today that my TV shipped from Indianapolis to Chicago via ARGENTINA (yes, South America), so who knows what kind of condition it’ll be in. Due to the 12,000 mile journey and the 6 days the TV spent in Argentina, I’ve told Amazon to cancel the order due to the possibility of damage to internal components of the TV. No response from them yet.

I won’t ever be ordering anything from Amazon again unless it can shipped via UPS or USPS.

Makes me wonder if the all bad reviews about technical problems with the TV resulted from damage during shipping. Maybe?

After a lot of debating, this was my first online big ticket purchase. I bought this over a Vizio from CC, which was over $300 cheaper! And I do not regret the decision. The picture quality is amazing. The sound is also very good. Lots of inputs at the back. What more can you ask?

The shipping service, CEVA was a mixed experience. The called the day they received the TV and I setup a time within 30 mins for them to come to my house. The guy opened the TV and put it where I wanted it. He then had me inspect the TV and switched it on. There were no defects, needless to say! However, 3 days after that I received a 2nd call from CEVA asking about scheduling an appointment for delivery of the TV!! How can that be, I had already received my TV. Maybe they were giving me a 2nd TV?? I told them I had already received it and hung up!

The only weird thing about this TV (and maybe others, or maybe with my cable box – TWC) is that when changing channel from (HD < -> SD) it blanks out for a sec. Kinda similar to what a PC monitor does when you change resolution. Dont know if others have noticed this, or is a ‘feature’ of HD TVs.

great picture quality for such a large screen
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
this is my 4th LCD TV. I didn’t think anyone else could top the 2 Toshiba’s I’ve been using. I love the durability of my Samsung cell phone and Amazon was selling this model out at a very good price so I bought. I am very happy with the picture quality, especially the channels I get in HD. You will need to have an HDMI connector cable to mazimize this quality, however. They sell for $30 at Walmart. My only disappointment is in the mounting of the speakers UNDER the TV so that the sound projects DOWN and bounces off the surface you have the TV setting on. My Toshiba’s project the sound out into the room where you get a true stereo/theater effect. It seems Samsung has done this to maximize the screen size for a given space which was my priority, but it it a puzzle.

A few days ago I purchased a Sony KDL40S4100 but returned it and replaced it with this beautiful set. I was experiencing some problems with ghosting and blacks when viewing HDDVD’s on the Sony.

This set leaps beyond the Sony. I was downsizing from a 46 to a 40 inch set and originally wanted this one. I had good luck with my previous Sony so that was why I got the second Sony (the one I returned). Bad decision.

You literally pull this set out of the box (stand pre-assembled) and plug it in. It does a search of over-the-air of which I get about 7 in HD and cable.

I threw in a couple of blu-ray movies and was very very impressed to say the least (I have a Samsung dual-player with hdmi – no issues).

Sound isn’t the greatest but I have a sound system already and it sounds great!

I also did the 2 firmware updates from the Samsung website. No known issues so far.

For the money, this is a wonderful set. I would highly recommend it to anyone considering an HDTV purchase.

Technology has sure changed the way we watch tv in the past few years. Do I care that this set isn’t bigger? No. Do I care that it isn’t 120 Hz? No. What I care about is that I am able to enjoy movie theater quality tv viewing in the comfort of my own home and at a fairly reasonable price.

Get one of these sets, you won’t be disappointed. Check out the reviews in AVS forums as well.

Had this HDTV for a month now and can say it was good purchase. Thank you Amazon for your prompt and courteous delivery! It was my second HDTV purchase from Samsung and I am very happy with the brand. This HDTV I put in the Bedroom. We watch the HDTV approx. 8-10 ft away and a 40″ is just about right. Great picture, just hooked-up HD Dish Network and WOW what a picture, and right out of the box! The internal speakers are good if you tweak them a little, but I would plan on connecting the TV to a receiver. Only problem I have noticed (which it isn’t after programming the satillite remote to control the TV), that you have to point the TV remote exactly at the TV IR port. But that’s a minor annoyance. I highly recommend this HDTV

Crisp picture out of the box
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this set after reading the Consumer Reports recommendation, and what impressed me the most was the performance right out of the box. I simply took the TV out, hooked it up and the picture is beautiful. The TV seems to handle motion well, and the HD is perfect.

If I could give it 4.5 stars I would due to the sound. Without a hook-up to a sound system, the sound is hollow at low volume… increasing the volume seems to eliminate the problem…

I could not be more pleased with my new Samsung 40-inch LCD HDTV. I had no trouble setting it up, and it was beautiful from the very first moment I turned it on. Then a week later I had AT&T’s U-verse fibre-optic service installed replacing my cable service. The picture is even more incredible than I ever thought it could be.

A couple of nonclaimers I want to put out there. I have yet to calibrate the TV and Comcast compression sucks. HD 1080p so far on cable is pretty non-existent so for a full appreciation of the product you will have to connect a console or a PC…I’m not sure if 1080p is supported via DishNetwork or DishTV. The TV itself looks great, blacks are black and colors are vibrant. I would make the purchase again. This isn’t 120hz just to put it out there for you folks not in the know and as much as it may seem that is thing to get, I’m pretty comfortable with my purchase. Plus its cheaper….

Amazing television for the price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I own this television for 4 months and I must admit, I love it.

I am one that will prefer the clarity of the picture over size. This TV satisfy me totally.

The image is really awesome. But then, this is to be expected with Samsung. I used to own a CRT screen for a couple of years, now a 22 inch monitor and I just loved the clarity of the picture. This TV belongs to the same category. Stunning.

I used it with HD-DVR from Comcast and with PS3. I just watched The Dark Knight in BluRay this weekend and the scene turned in IMAX looked amazing. I could not believe how good it looks.

This TV for under 1000$ is a steal.

Background

Last year me and my wife purchased a 37inch Toshiba LCD. The TV died so we found ourselves in the market for another LCD.

After too many hours of online research i narrowed it down to the Samsung A550 and the A650. We also looked at the Comparable Sony Line as well as the Sharp LCD’s. Needless to say i decided on the A550. After looking at both products in a showroom the A650 looked marginally better but not 200+ dollars better.

When reviewing this product i am going to take price into account. For the price i do not think their is a better value out their. (That is coming from a biased owner)

1. Picture Quality and Inputs

The picture quality is fantastic. I have tested action Movies, Upconverted DVD’s, Blu Ray and Sports (Preseason HD Football) Their is no noticable motion blur. The images are crisp and clear. It offers 3HDMI inputs which is plenty (Cable box, Blu Ray, Video Games) and even has a USB port for Photo viewing (interface is simple and you can add music to the background while you watch your slide show).

2. Sound

Eh. Not so great. Tried it for a few minutes just to check it out and all i can say is not so good. (Sound was not a factor in my decision making we own a very nice home theater set up. It’s hallow, and doesn’t hold up when you raise the volume past 50%. My personal feeling is you are never going to get good sound from any Flat screen because their is no depth to the speaker. Small Speakers = Small Sound it’s one area where smaller has not meant any better quality.(In my opinion).

Generally people should consider investing part of their LCD budget on sound. You get a much more balanced set up. Speakers in an old CRT tend to be better than those found in an LCD.

Overall

Excellent product by Samsung. I feel like it offers excellent value for the price.

TV simply didn’t live up to the hype.
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
We got this TV as a replacement for our 42″ plasma that failed. We were really excited to get an LCD that had great reviews, even though it was a couple of inches smaller. After all, we had read that Samsung is the best.

While we did not have the HDMI issue that many write about, the sound quality on this TV was absolutely horrific. For a TV that many raved about the picture, the sound quality was far less than our 3 year old plasma that had just broken. I realize many people don’t buy an LCD for the sound quality (and we do have external speakers), but you should be able to stomach the sound on your TV.

The biggest, most glaring issue with this TV was the picture setting. You have four options total, which should be plenty. But I always like watching the full screen viewing, regardless of it being HD or regular TV. There is no way to stretch regular TV to be full screen unless you want to use the “zoom” mode, which cuts off a good portion of the top and bottom of the picture. It was dismayed to find this basic feature missing from this TV.

After two days, this TV went back in the box and was returned, not because of a defect, but because the sound quality and picture options were not thought through. I am shocked at all of the great reviews on this TV. There are simply better options. We found a 46″ Sony Bravia LCD (120 hz) for $50 more and are thrilled.

After waiting to purchase an LCD TV, a price drop (to $899) pushed me to purchase. The Consumer Report high rating was justified. Easy to setup and connect to the HT, DVD, Tivo. White Glove delivery service was fine; unit arrived undamaged. The picture is clear and the extra $500 or so was not worth the 46-inch size (or the 120 hz – that bothered my eyes in the store). My brother is more the videophile and he loves it. Would buy again and recommend to anyone.

I couldn’t be more happier than I am with this TV!

All the research I did in finding this TV was well worth it! I play my XBOX 360 on this and it’s show the graphics at its best! 1080p really does make a difference and the 30,000:1 Contrast ratio is off-the-wall amazing! I haven’t played with much more of the settings it has but as soon as a plugged everything in I didn’t have to do anything more. This thing has a mind of its own! just Plug n Play!

There’s a lot of bad reviews about the sound. I must be deaf or ignorant to detailed sound, cause I am pleased with the sound quality on this system! I guess if you really want to get amazing behind-your-ear sound you can get a surround system.

So, if you’re still wondering whether to buy this, you better do it before the free shipping is out and the White Glove service! I ordered this on a Wednesday and it got to my house on Saturday! I didn’t have a rush delivery at all.

Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I did a lot of research on this TV before purchasing. I went to all the big box stores and hit all the review websites and what I kept hearing was that the only LCD TVs worth looking at are either Sony or Samsung. This one in particular kept getting rave reviews from all the reviewers and salespeople I talked with. Even a salesman who worked on commission said he would recommend this TV over some that were more expensive. The general consensus was that you have to get up close to two thousand dollars to get a TV better than this in this size.

I’ve had this set for a few weeks now and have noticed several things. The picture is very clear, whatever source you select. I’m only running component video cables to it right now, but I’m anticipating that the picture will be even better once I get an HDMI cable on it. The menus are easy to use and easy to navigate, unlike many TVs I’ve owned. I’ve read reviews from a few folks who say that they don’t like the little night light at the bottom of the frame, but if you dig into the menus a little, you can turn that on or off.

My only big complaint about this TV, and it is a reasonable one, is the sound. First off, I’m not an audiophile. I can’t tell the difference between extremely good speakers and only fairly good speakers without a lot of help from someone more knowledgeable. What I do know is that my little Philips CRT 25″ that I got for a few hundred bucks from Wal-mart had sound that blows this TV out of the water. I don’t push this TV too hard, and have never turned the volume up more than 1/3 of its capacity. Even so, when you get high sections in a song or something, the speakers make a really weird sound that I haven’t heard from anything but an extremely cheap boom box. It’s really frustrating to have a great picture and have the sound be so weak.

I would also caution you that there is only one composite video input on this set, and it’s on the side. If you have an older DVD player or a VCR or even an older video game system that you want to hook up to this, you’ll either have to switch a lot of cables manually, or invest in one of those switch boxes. There are plenty of component video and HDMI inputs, but not much for lower quality feeds.

So my recommendation to you is that if you’re going to invest in this TV, invest in some speakers as well. They don’t have to be amazing, but just about anything you buy will be better than what this thing comes with. That said, this TV is easily the best picture quality you can get in this size and price range, especially with the prices offered by Amazon (the same set was going for fifteen hundred dollars at the big box stores, and thirteen fifty on sale).

There’s a lot of talk about 120 herz, etc. At 40″ you’re not going to notice any difference between this and newer models except the $500 you didn’t spend. With a 1080P uploading DVD player or Blu-Ray, your picture will be better than most movie theaters.

It’s got plenty of ports, and you can play with the picture settings, should you desire.

On an HD satellite or cable box, you will notice “paisley” blacks on the non-HD channels, something not as noticeable if you are just using a regular box.

At $900, it’s the best deal on TVs in the Spring of ‘09.

I was very apprehensive buying a LCD TV on the internet. I was bothered about dead pixels (though I hear these are no longer the kind of problem these used to be), getting an inferior quality/scratched unit etc. etc. And man I am glad the way it all turned out. The shipping may be a slight problem – these freight companies just like the movers are so hard to tame!!!

Features/results I liked:

1. Color/contrast are outstanding (yes it beats my friend’s much more expensive Sony ‘x’ series)

2. Back light can be made very bright indeed and the contrast holds up to these high levels just so well

3. Menus are iconic and rich text based and quite intuitive

Features I didn’t:

1. I find myself fumbling a lot trying to switch between the sources. I wish this was more intelligent. Why can’t this TV just identify the active sources and just play them all one by one and let me choose?

2. Why can’t I switch on the TV on with a source preselected? If my home theater can switch on on the Aux mode, why can’t this TV be switched on on HDMI1?

3. There are interdependencies between menu items. If one part of the menu is selected one way, certain other parts would appear disabled! This is outrageous (Strangely this applies to DNIe, one of Samsung’s hotly advertised features)

4. If I use component cable, the non HD channels actually look better than when I use the HDMI cable. Where are all the up-conversion algorithms?

5. The speakers are OK but by listening to them, I always get the feeling that these manufacturers force you to buy home theaters!

My overall view. Great buy looking at the competition it has!

I’m quite happy with this TV. Easy installation, clear picture and simply menu navigation are all highlights of the product. I’d go so far as to say that it’s become a point of jealousy among my friends who didn’t read consumer reports reviews (and others) and went for the cheapest models they could find. This one is best in class, as far as I’m concerned and I did some comparative shopping.

The only con I can really think of is that the on-board sound isn’t the greatest, but it isn’t worth taking a star away from the product. I’m not saying that it sounds bad, but it just doesn’t give the full experience that the picture does (if that makes any sense). It really isn’t much of a problem if you run it though an external system – I run it through my stereo and my speakers have never sounded better.

I am not a TV expert. I did my homework, and this came out to be the best TV in the range I was looking at ($1000-$1200). I originally intended to buy a bigger TV, but the quality of the Samsung product swayed me. My only complaints are that it attracts dust, it is slow to turn on (or give you any sign that it is in the process of turning on), and there is only a VGA connection for your computer, not a true DVI input. But the picture is great, sound is fine but it is only internal speakers.

Worked for a week then died
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this tv and set it up and thought the picture quality was great and that the sound quality was so so. This is fine since I hooked it up to a surround sound system and used that. It worked fine for about a week and then one day I can home, turned it on and there was no picture. I had sound, but absolutely no picture. I couldn’t even get the menu or sound volume to come up. I called Samsung and they told me that they would send someone out to my house to repair it. As it turns out, they won’t actually send someone to the house. I have to drive 40 miles to bring it to the repair shop, which is where the tv is now.

UPDATE:

It took about a month before I finally got the tv back. It was very annoying to have to drive to and from the repair shop that was so far away. Apparently there was a catastrophic failure of the power supply, mother board, and LCD screen. In fact, they had to replace so many of the parts, the repair person told me that I’m basically getting a new tv. Since I had the tv fixed, it has worked well for the past few months. The picture quality is good (even though the sound still stinks). In all, I am satisfied with the tv itself. As for quality, I will give Samsung the benefit of the doubt. Maybe I just got unlucky (which is basically what the repair people told me). I asked the guys at the repair shop which tv’s they see the least, and they said Samsung and Sony. What I found completely unacceptable was Samsung’s lack of customer service. I feel as though I was lied to when on the phone with the Samsung help center. The tv repair people also blamed Samsung for the long repair time. They said that Samsung questioned whether so many parts actually failed (which caused a red tape delay) and then was very slow in mailing out the parts to the shop. If you are going to spend so much money on an electronic device, I would hope that the company would have quality customer service to match their product.

The TV was pretty much as promised. The set up was straight forward and quick. The picture is outstanding. The two complaints are sound quality and the remote control operation. I read the reviews about the less than stellar sound quality and purchased anyhow figuring it cant be that bad. Well it pretty much is. Very flat and not fitting a set of its otherwise very good quality. Why they designed this set to have the speakers in lower back side projecting rearward is beyond me as well. The remote has to be pretty much perpendicular to the front middle of the set for the signal to be recognized. Any deviation left or right or up and down and the it wont work. A little frustrating when used in any other seating position in my family room but one chair head on. My 32′ Toshiba Regza has much better sound and remote function

This is our first hd tv. We bought an hd tivo and this tv and the results are fabulous. We just got it yesterday. Our room is large with a wall of windows (not on the wall facing the tv, but the side wall) and the tv is great with no glare and plenty of brightness in daylight and at night. The picture is fabulous – amazingly clear, sharp and bright.

The sound is suspicious – I haven’t optimized it yet with the equalizer. Sometimes it sounds fine but sometimes I’ve noticed it sounds poor. Part of the problem is the tv is recessed in a deep cutout in the wall and the speakers are on the back of the side of the tv & there’s a big hollow, wood space behind the tv for the sound to bounce around in. I’ve considered putting something soft (carpet) hidden on the wall behind the tv to deaden the echo – that would probably help.

PIP only works with analog channels and is not easily accessible on the remote – disappointing since analog broadcasts will cease next year and are lower quality anyway… You can’t switch easily, etc.

There is only one svideo input and it is on the side (will eventually get hdmi dvd/blueray player anyway, so that won’t matter too much).

I don’t have enough devices, but I imagine 3 hdmi inputs will be 1 too few.

I labored over the 650 for the 120hz feature, but finally decided that that marketing feature was not compelling enough.

I’m very happy.

Awesome picture quality and great price for a 2008 model
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I first checked all the HDTVs at a local Best Buy store and I will admit they all looked nice to me. My decision to buy this TV from Amazon.com was influenced by these factors: Samsung brand, 2008 model, great price, no tax, and free white glove shipping.

I have connected my TV to Comcast HD set-top box using HDMI cables. The picture quality on HD channels is stunning and very good on non-HD channels too. Initially I had some apprehensions that perhaps 40″ wasn’t big enough, but after watching all those vivid, sharp images of people and things up close it doesn’t feel small at all! Earlier I had used “component” cables for video connection but HDMI is clearly better. DVDs also look nice. For audio I have a premium audio home theater system (Bose) so I have turned the TV volume to OFF.

My only complaint against this TV is with the extreme difficulty I had in taking off the stand that came with it. The screws at the back somehow got “stuck” and wouldn’t come off readily. Samsung customer service representative on the phone didn’t have any constructive advice to offer either. I had to tilt the TV, screw back and unscrew several times before the screws came off one by one. In such a high-tech TV they didn’t get this simple mechanical thing right. Now I have the TV mounted to a floor mount-stand (Bello) and am loving it.

I did a lot of research before settling on the Samsung LN40A550. Samsung is one of the top brands, and the only thing that worried me about this TV was the possibility that not being a 120hz machine would leave sports and action movies unwatchable.

I found a website called tweaktv that offers picture calibration settings, and these made a huge difference on the picture quality out of the box. Changing the sharpness down to 2 and setting the mode to “Movie” make for a huge improvement in picture quality. Jaggy text went away, and the picture got a lot cleaner. I used the tv for a week without HD, because I didn’t have time to go get the box. Picture quality was OK with regular cable and component cables. Better than the old regular tv it replaced, and dvds played with S-Video from a standard DVD player looked crisp and good.

Today I finally got the HD box from my cable company, hooked up with HD cables. HD broadcasts are just stunning on this tv (keep in mind that when time you change input sources, the first time using that new source all the settings are back to the defaults. Each new input source will need the picture settings messed with the first time. HD looked pretty bad on the default settings until that sharpness got turned down)… Non HDTV channels look ok, but no better with the HDMI connection, and maybe slightly worse in a few cases.

ANYHOW, heres the skinny. Loving this TV. The menu’s all make sense and are easy to navigate. The remote is also intuitive and easy to use( it is NOT a universal remote, btw). Sound is pretty good. Connecting to it is easy, and all the connections are well labeled and easy to use. It looks good, and seems much bigger in my living room than in the showrooms. We see a lot less glare on the screen when the sun comes in the window as well.

And, the thing that worried me- almost no problem with motion blurring. Sports and action movies are all very watchable on HD (somewhat less so on the regular cable). There is a slight amount of blurring during extremely fast action, but its not distracting at all.I was scared that this would be the dealbreaker, but like everything else on this tv, it exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this tv! If you find a good price on it, buy it without fear.

I knew we would like the samsung 40 inch TV, we had done our research and purchased through amazon based on the price. The no tax and “white” glove delivery sealed the deal, ….then I read a number of delivery reviews on amazon’s site and got REALLY nervous.

People had horror stories of dealing with the delivery service. I can assure you we had the easiest and best time.

The service called me and wanted to deliver the next day, I couldn’t be home from work and asked for a different day, no problem. I picked my time slot, meaning morning or afternoon and they came when I asked on the day I requested.

White glove service is better then I could have hoped for. They brought it into the house, unboxed it, set it up, tried it and took the trash with them. What more could you ask for!

Beautiful TV until it stopped working
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This is a beautiful and sleek TV with a great picture and lots of nice adjustment features. Only problem was that it stopped turning on less than one month after I bought it. Not what you would expect from a $1000 TV.

Waiting for a replacement from Amazon right now–I will give Samsung one more try.

A fantastic budget HDTV
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I shopped for brand + economic + quality HDTV, I came with Samsung LN40A550. I tried one of the Toshiba 37″ LCDs from Costco, but had to return due to some strange issue with its firmware. I agree with most of the reviewer’s +ve comments on this model. I don’t see any -ve as I didn’t face any issues yet.

Let downs:

1) PIP is not a selling point. This works only for standard resolution, not HD. So, it’s simply not usable.

2) Cannot permanently delete a channel, the kids are smart enough to add the channel back from the master list.

3) Cannot block specific channels, can only block based on program ratings. I actually want to block the kids programs, and open only for the weekends. Not possible with this, a severe let down.

Great TV for the money
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had this TV for a couple weeks now and I absolutely love it. It has a great picture and along with my new Sony upconvert DVD player my DVDs looks great. I don’t have HD programming yet, but even my Dish Network programming over an S-video cable look good. This TV also has a good digital tuner in it for those looking for over the air tv stations. My only complaint is the speakers. They sound a little weak but with a little tweeking you can make it sound OK. The TVs menus are also very easy to use and navigate and TV set up is a snap. CEVA shipping was speedy enough but not what it is advertised to be. I live about 90 miles from their nearest whearhouse so they farmed out the delivery to a different carrier. I don’t think the guy who delivered it in a semi truck knew what a HDTV. So needless to say I didn’t get any help setting it up or even carrying in the house for that matter. Overall I would deffinetely recommend this TV to anyone.

Best $800 Flat Panel LCD I could find
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My goal when my old faithful TV finally gave up the ghost was to buy the best $800 TV I could find. I purchased this Samsung on April 7, 2009 for $849 and I am happy to say I think I succeeded. I was lucky that CR magazine just featured flat panel TVs in the March issue and this set ranked third in its class (first was the 42 inch version of the same TV). It’s sleek and beautiful.

For me, the picture is great. I don’t have any HD, but this set’s standard definition picture quality makes me believe that HD would be awesome.

Audiophiles may not like the sound quality of the speakers, but most of them will channel their sets through surround sound systems anyway.

I think this TV is an excellent value and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

The TV gives a good picture, but really lousy, muted sound. Mess with the equalizer all you want, but muffled is the word. The lowest price guarantee is a game of wills. The price has dropped twice since I bought it, but the offshore customer rep was a master of the runaround. No refund. His accent was even more muted than the TV. I am still fighting for my $105. Any odds on my getting it? If you are happy, consider yourself lucky. Some of us regret the buy.

Great TV for the price
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
First, I have to give 5 stars just to Amazon for their excellent service as always (fully supports their great review in a recent Businessweek issue). The TV shipped quickly and was in my bedroom within 5 working days (the attitude of the delivery person left something to be desired, but I’ll leave that out).

This TV is for the bedroom and the first day our eyes were hurting thanks to the bright, sharp and vivid picture. We are used to a 42″ in the living room which was a DLP, so this took some getting used to. After turning down the backlight, it was perfect. I have to admit that I have seen slightly sharper picture, but its usually in TV’s that cost at least $400 more (for same size), but for our bedroom it is perfect (and huge). I prefer to watch TV on this one than my Sony DLP which is also a very high quality HDTV.

After doing a lot of research online and seeing the TV in stores, we finally decided to go for this one and glad we did. You will not regret getting this TV and Amazon has the best price.

DO NOT ORDER FROM 3RD PARTY VENDOR
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I’ve ordered from amazon.com for about 3 years. I am a prime member. I ordered this TV because of the other users ratings on this web site. This TV has pixilation problems. When there is fast motion, you can see the pixels for a brief period less than 1 second. I have a plasma TV with the same Fios connection with no such problems. If you are not a videophile this will not bother your. If you however pay attention to it like I do, this will drive you nuts. I tried to return the product to 6th avenue electronics (3rd party vendor), and they will not take it back because TV is larger than 37 inches. They claim this was in the fine print when I ordered. Their rep. told me all LCD’s pixelate with fast motion! Come on, I thought this technology had improved. I don’t care about it being bright, next time I’m going back to plasma. Amazon.com rep. was from overseas and was useless. I’m done with ordering electronics through amazon. I’m very disappointed.

Speakers are awful, lost the picture on an angle
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
We are one of the families who bought this TV from Amazon and returned it. The purchase was made after we performed extensive research using Consumer Reports, online consumer blogs, and professional review sites. All the sites gave the sound on this TV an above average rating. We could not disagree more. The speakers on this TV are the worst we ever had…think of the am transistor radios from your childhood. We resorted to purchasing external speakers designed for computers. We also found the picture to be great as long as we were dead center. If we got off center either to the side or at an angle, it became hazy and washed out. After trying for several weeks to make the TV work for us, we returned it. We now own two Panasonic HD plasama TVs. We also gave an LCD Sony to my in-laws. The Panasonic and Sony TVs have superior pictures both dead center and at angles. The sound quality is enhances watching TV.

Went from a 19in TV to a 40in Samsung and very satisfied. I had checked different TVs for quality, view-ability, price, reputation, etc, for 3 months and finally decided on this set for $799, the best price in April 2009. Even the tuner card [I use a roof antenna] was more powerful than the converter box I bought with the gov’t coupon. Very happy all around. PLUS, when I registered at the Samsung website, I was given a 3 month extension on the warranty for FREE.

The television is gorgeous and works very well. The audio quality of the TV, which has been an issue for some review writers, is really not an issue unless you are an audiophile, in which case you probably have surround sound and it really becomes a non-issue. The sound quality is completely adjustable if you feel you need to tinker with it.

As for the shipper, CEVA promised that my TV would arrive on a certain day and then it did not. Amazon was willing to compensate me 10% of the purchase price in an amazon gift card. I ended up getting it a week after it was supposed to be there. Not Amazon’s fault, but they took the fall.

Best 60Hz 1080p HDTV Under $1000!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I did a lot of research looking for our perfect High Definition television for about a year before finally making our purchase. Because we have only one television in our house we wanted to be certain of our choice. Sure, you can spend more money for the same size television with similar specs, but why would you?

The Samsung LN40A550 has a stellar full hi-def 1080p picture for a 40″ HDTV running at only 60Hz. After seeking out an HDTV for many moons that would satisfy our viewing needs we had basically settled on one of three options: a Sony Bravia, a Sharp Aquos or the Samsung television which we now own and couldn’t be happier with. The resolution is superb, the colors are rich and performance is rock solid.

From the opening chime you’ll be delighted until you turn it off and the set chimes a second time (there is the option to turn this off if it annoys you). There are three HDMI inputs and a PC input (handily located on the side for quick laptop connectivity); we currently only utilize two HDMI ports, one for an Xbox 360 which doubles as our upconverting DVD player and one for our HD DVR/Receiver.

The set up is a snap, and if you’re familiar with menu schemes, you’ll quickly find yourself navigating with ease. We picked this set up on sale for under $800 after waiting a long time for prices to come down and I see no viable competition for it in the $1100 and under range. If you require more HDMI inputs or demand a 120 Hz picture, then I can’t quite recommend this for you, but if you have typical family needs and want a rock-solid beautiful television for under $1000 you can do no better. Buy it. You’ll be glad you did.

My husband and I are just regular people looking for a replacement TV for our living room. We don’t know or even understand all the fancy terminology or the inputs, cables, components, etc. that now come with buying a TV. We are actually “old school” people that just watch our TV, so understand that our expectations are for picture quality and value alone. We stood in front of many TV’s and searched on-line for months before purchasing, and we are absolutely thrilled with the quality and the cost. My sister has a Samsung 42″ 720, and I cannot believe how much better it looks than hers (plus they bought at a much, much higher price about a year and half ago)!! So get it and enjoy!!

Not Impressed
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I’ve had the TV for a month now, and I can honestly say that I’m not impressed with it. Part of the problem is that my TV has one of the known Samsung defects – it switches itself on and off without my input. That problem is actually getting worse in that it keeps doing it repeatedly (off on off on…) until I unplug it. Sometimes I can watch for as much as 30 minutes before it starts this behavior, but I know it’s coming. Oh, and when it starts doing it, none of the buttons on the remote control work and none of the buttons on the TV work. The only option is to unplug the TV.

But that’s not the only reason for my 1-star review (it’s part of it). I know electronics can be a hit or miss proposition, and all manufacturers will produce a defective unit now and then. I get that. Amazon will take the TV back because I called within 30 days, but I have to give Samsung the chance to fix it first. They don’t seem to be in a big rush in getting a repair person to my house, although that could be the fault of the local repair shop. In any case, I wait…

Beyond the defective unit I received, the TV itself is nothing special. If it’s your first HDTV, you’ll likely be blown away by the improvement. If you already own another HDTV, you may be underwhelmed. Let’s face it, the picture is supposed to be awesome and most HDTVs will deliver that much. What I don’t like about the TV is how it’s made. The casing is incredibly cheap plastic that actually looks nice, but it reflects every bit of ambient light in the room (shiny black – good luck getting finger prints off of it). What good is a perfect picture when you can vividly see windows and lamps in the frame around the picture? The TV is also flimsy! You can actually affect the picture by putting light pressure on the casing with your finger, as I discovered while adjusting the TV on the wall mount. Lightly touching it in the wrong way will cause a flicker. I have a Panasonic plasma that is built like a tank compared to this model.

The TV’s sound is also pretty bad, but that’s been mentioned in several reviews so it should come as no surprise. If you’re hooking up home theater surround sound, the sound is probably not going to be an issue. For my purposes, this is a bedroom TV, so I just wanted to use the internal speaker. That’s probably not going to be an acceptable strategy (and I’m not an audiophile, by any means).

Finally, and I may be wrong on this, but I can’t find any way to hook up a “video out” device. I use a DVD recorder to record television shows on my other TV by running an HDMI connection from the input source to the TV, and then running a “video out” connection from the TV to the DVD recorder. This allows you to watch in high definition and record in whatever definition your recorder allows. Theoretically, you can run it all through your home theater receiver and/or run your input to the DVD recorder first, but that simply doesn’t work as well as a TV to Recorder connection (going through the recorder first basically means you lose the HD of the original broadcast). To me, that’s a shortcoming that does matter since I really didn’t want to complicate this TV with a whole home theater setup. This will also affect anyone still using a VCR who wishes to watch in HD and still have the option to record (in much lower definition).

The variety of inputs is relatively robust, and this model does still include an S-video input on the side (note, the newer model Samsungs do not have S-video inputs). Oh well, the TV doesn’t work yet anyway, and I’m sort of hoping Samsung can’t fix it so I can return it to Amazon and buy another Panasonic (no I don’t work for Panasonic, either).

Update: Samsung finally got back to me about fixing my TV. They said I qualified for in-home repair, which they would arrange. Then the repair person called me and said that they don’t do in-home repair, so I’d have to box up the TV and bring it in to their shop. Since I was boxing it up anyway, I called Amazon and they said to ship it back for a replacement or refund. I chose the refund because I plan to buy a better TV. 5 stars for Amazon, no stars for Samsung.

I’ve owned this set for a little over a month, I’m almost afraid to write the review because I haven’t had the best luck with electronics and I don’t want to jinx it, but it’s honestly been one of the best purchases I’ve made. Prior to purchasing, I did some research on the net, and Samsung consistantly came up as one the best HDTV manufacturers and this model particularly ranked high. Originally, I was looking at the 32″ HDTV but the 40″ went on sale a couple days later, it had all the right bells & whistles, and for the money I couldn’t ask for better. The shipping was free and superfast (within days), the delivery men brought it up to the second floor, took it out of the box and set it down on the stand. The set up was quick and easy. The picture is just amazingly beautiful. After reading other reviews, the sound quality was of some concern but it sounds as good if not better than other TVs I had checked out. Believe me I’m in no hurry to set up the Surround Sound system. I’ve gone to a few friend’s homes and overall their higher end sets just don’t compare. You won’t be disappointed.

Mind boggling picture, sound not so much..
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
It’s been about 2 months since I have this TV. This is my first HDTV and wow what a transition. Even before I upgraded my cable to HD, I was pleasantly surprised to see this Samsung TV pick up the local HD channels through the QAM tuner. Anyway, the picture quality is mind boggling with true colors and great black levels. I am a bit annoyed with the dynamic contrast which prompted me to turn this feature off. There is enough number of I/O ports and the swivel base makes it more convenient. I compared this with the Sony TVs and decided to go ahead with this for more bang for buck. The shipping service was great, the CEVA folks unpacked and setup the TV to make sure it’s working. Amazon’s 30 day price guarantee is also great and I received a couple of refunds when the price fell down.

The sound on the other hand is quite disappointing. I’d say it’s just about OK for general viewing but woefully inadequate for movie/sports watching. Somehow with the entertainment center I have the sound seems to be directed more toward the back than to the front. I think it’s a given fact that most of the newer TVs on the market need home theater systems, except maybe the higher end models. I just got myself a Samsung HT-TWZ412H and it’s so much better. The ANYNET feature worked like a breeze through the HDMI and the TV remote controls the sound on the home theater setup. I connected the cable box to the home theater using an optical cable.

SD channels on this HDTV look like crap, so much that I’ve completely stopped watching SD channels.

All in all the TV is great but if it fits the budget, you’ll have to seriously consider getting yourself a home theater to up your experience.

Samsung has done it again
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I shopped around for a long time, but finally came to the conclusion that with all variables taken into account (size, contrast ratio, response time, cost) a Full HD, 1080p Samsung with 30,000:1 contrast ratio at the price you can find this at (less than $800 if you look around) is simply outstanding.

Bottom line: The price to product ratio for 40″ Samsungs is 5-star. The price differential for televisions even slightly larger just isn’t worth it.

J. Siegrist @ 8:44 pm

Great HD, Poor SD
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This is a really nice TV, especially since right now the price is just over $1k.

Pros: Great HD picture – this includes HD television stations (for me output from a digital HD cable box at 1080i through an HDMI cable) and Blu-Ray. Standard DVDs upconverted to 1080p then sent through HDMI look pretty darn good – some pixelation and color variations here and there, but mostly looking good (also depends on how new the DVD is – newer looks better). The picture is near perfect. That’s all that needs to be said there. Set-up is fast, the TV is not that heavy, and the swivel stand is great. Menus are fairly straight forward, although in my opinion there are too many menu options – great if you are a perfectionist and really know what you are doing when it comes to fine-tuning the color. I think there a good amount of inputs. Nintendo Wii through component cables looks fine.

Cons: Would be nice if there was a digital coax audio out – there is only an optical out, and it doesn’t pump out 5.1 sound (i.e., you go from 7.1 or 5.1 to 2.1 if you run the sound through your TV to your audio system). Standard definition (non-HD) programming looks fairly bad. I bought a cable line power booster, set the HD cable box to output only 480i when on standard channels, set the sharpness to 0, and turned digital noise reduction off. This helped quite a bit, but it still is noticeably bad. There is a lot of pixelation, some channels are passable some are awful. That is my biggest complaint for this TV.

Final note – viewing distance means a lot. I sit about 6-7 feet away, and can see pixelation. If I step back another 2 feet, the image is much better. So, if you sit 6 feet away, I would go for the 37″ instead.

Fantastic HDTV
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After going back and forth between different HDTV models for about a month, we finally decided to go with this television, the Samsung LN40A550. We could not be any happier. It is missing a few key features that the newer models boast (120Hz, an extra HDMI, Touch of Color, higher contrast ratio, & ability to “seamlessly connect” to many other digital devices), but we decided that most of these features were ones we didn’t absolutely need to have, and for about a $500 savings, we have no doubt that we made the right choice.

This television has a myriad of inputs (3 HDMI, Components, Composite, S-Video, VGA). I can’t imagine ever running out of inputs, which is a concern I’ve had with every other television set I’ve ever owned. The picture quality is fantastic. It doesn’t support 120Hz, but after watching it for a week, I don’t mind at all. The sound quality is also exceptional, with very little tweaking. Delivery service was great, too.

As far as overall quality goes, I believe this TV to be on par with most of the Sony models out there, for a couple hundred dollars less. We were also impressed with the new Philips line of HDTVs… they also had great picture quality, so check them out, too.

White glove service went well, a call to set up delivery time came and was honored, but the delivery person had no idea that he was responsible for unpacking, setting and ensuring the item worked.

Other than that, the television is very good.

I got a great deal on this via the Amazon Warehouse section, which as I understand it sells items with dinged up boxes at a great discount. I also bought an Xbox 360 Elite from Amazon Warehouse, which worked great, and was flawless inside of the slightly creased box. This purchase, on the other hand, actually had a tiny amount of damage. When it arrived, there was a tiny crack in the oval-shaped plastic base of the television, and the volume up button on the side was pushed in on one of the corners. I’m impatient as hell when it comes to shipping/receiving, and the comparatively slight damage was only aesthetic in effect, so I kept the unit anyway.

Aside from its less than perfect entrance, this television is amazing! I’ve got a friend that has the same size television from a different company, and mine blows it away in terms of clarity, contrast, brightness, and overall quality. I’ve got several game systems, and now have them all hooked up simultaneously, which has encouraged me to play them more often. I also use this as an external monitor for my MacBook Pro, which definitely makes those work-from-home days all the more enjoyable–I tried this on a 46″ Samsung, and it was simply too big to comfortably sit in front of and work with. The 40″ is definitely the best for my needs, and the television was totally worth its cost.

Along with having arrived in a quasi-damaged state, I deducted one star because the speakers are kind of muffled-sounding. Granted, the speakers are on the bottom of the unit and thus the soundwaves have to bounce off of the desk/tv stand/etc before they make it to your ears, but they sound somewhat muffled all the same. However, if you crank them up, it’s all good, and they can definitely get super loud–though you audiophiles out there may want to consider some sort of accompanying sound system in the future.

Meets All Expectations
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Having done a fair amount of research before buying this model, I had a firm idea of what to expect. My principal concern was whether the difference between the refresh rate of 60Hz offered by this model versus the 120Hz offered by the LN40A650 would make a difference to my viewing pleasure. So far, I am happy to say it has not. All other aspects of performance are as good as or better than expected. I had no problems with initial setup, the video performance is spectacular, and though the audio is not great that has made no difference because I use a home theater system. My son has used it for gaming with an X-Box 360 and is raving. Even my wife, who was less than thrilled about having another TV in the house, has been enthralled. For the money (especially with the price dropping now) I cannot imagine how this product can be beat.

I waited for a good deal on this and picked it up 2 weeks ago for $760. Can’t beat the price and the TV is great. Delivery was faultless too.

We bought this as a gift for our niece and nephew, needless to say, they were thrilled. Everything about this TV is beautiful – it even looks amazing when it is turned off. The quality of the picture and performance are everything we were looking for and more. Now we need one for ourselves!!

I was all set to buy the 2001 Samsung model LNT 4071. I am glad I waited because the Samsung 2008 model LN40A550 40″ 1080p LCD HDTV appears quite superior, to me, and a little cheaper if you catch it at the right time and right place. I got a great deal at Amazon.com on mine.

Great product, price and service

We did the “search all the chain stores”, too. Once we decided on the Samsung, we tried to buy the A530 at a major department store, but it was out of stock. I went back to Amazon and for the same price as the local stores’ A530, we could buy the A550. Great deal! Plus, no tax. We knew we wanted a Samsung, so with the price and the good reviews of the “white glove” service we bought it. Glad we did! The service was excellent and they even worked with our timeline and knocked it down to a 2 hour window. So, if you know you want this TV, I say buy it from Amazon because of the price and the service.

Samsung LN40A550 and Amazon – Winning Combo

Trust me, you won’t have to worry about whether or not you should have bought a Sony. This TV is an excellent buy and will not disappoint you in it’s picture quality. I don’t know what kinds of built in TV speakers the previous writers were comparing to the Samsung speakers, but they certainly are not horrible when compared to other LCD TV speakers. While they’re not designed for listening to music, they certainly aren’t as bad as people claim. They are perfectly suitable for the majority of TV programs.

Also, the “white glove” delivery service by Amazon was great. Called the day before, showed up 1/2 hour early, and carefully delivered the TV. Don’t even worry about buying a big TV from Amazon. It will arrive in perfect shape, and they will unbox it and help set it up.

I previously owmed a Visio which I thought was great until I went comparison shopping. All the other TVs look like my old Visio. Then I saw the Samsung. That was it. My decision was made right then. I went home and did some online pricing and Amazon won hands down. The shipment and delivery were the best I ever experienced. I ordered the set on Thursday evening and it was in my living room Monday morning. The delivery company unboxed the set, placed it on my entertainment center and took the box away as well. I was amazed. Sometimes watching High Def programming, I am just in awe that this is my TV. Plus I am only using a HDTV antenna! The only small negative is the sound is a little tinny. But I have the TV hooked up to my sound system so it really doesn’t matter.

I bought this for my parents after their 12 year old 32″ TV went out and they had to use a little 19″ for a while. We were going to get another 32″ but talking to my siblings and researching online and at stores we decided on a 40″ so I started to look for the best price and I found at it here at Amazon as usual. We were not looking at Samsung’s because they were on average $[...], but then I found this one for $[...] less and I am so happy with it.

The sound and picture is great, the glare is minimal. The viewing angles are really great. I can’t think of any negatives on this TV it is great quality for a great price I highly recommend it if you are not looking for the most updated technology.

Update

I have had the TV awhile now and the only complaint is that unless you have surround sound on movies you have to crank the volume WAY up to like 40 other then that is is still great.

Update

If you turn the surround sound on the sound is much better on movies and TV shows in general, also if you change the color mode to normal and the mode of the TV to standard it is a much better picture and saves energy, it will automatically go from darker to brighter depending on the brightness of the room.

I did extensive research before I bought this TV. Went to Best Buy to view some different models, checked out Consumer Reports for ratings, and read many reviews online. I’m very happy with it. Amazon shipped it quickly…the shipping company called the day before to make sure someone would be home. (Always have the shipper open the package before leaving your home so you can look over your TV for any damages.) There are plenty of adjustable color features to fine tune the picture to your space…which is something all stores do to optimize the picture under the store lights. If you’re looking for a 40″ LCD this TV is a great choice.

My husband splurged to buy this TV, and now he’s glad he did. Awesome color and sound. Cool features, although we haven’t figured them all out yet.

Now I could sit here and talk your ear off about all the technical mumbo jumbo this t.v. got going on but odds are that 1. you don’t understand it and 2. you don’t really care. All you want to know is how it works, how it looks, is it dependable, and is it worth it. and the answers are easily, amazing, like wind in a hurricane, and duh.

This is not my first HDTV. It’s my first 1080p t.v., and thanks to it I know now how much of an idiot I was 3 years earlier when I didn’t wait for a 1080p. I’ve gone through sooooo maaaaany countless problems with my RCA DLP (if you have any knowledge of t.v’s and their dependencies based on models i’d have to ask you to kindly shut up at the moment because I’ve figured out the mistake that I’ve made, thank you,) that I was actually skeptical about the way this Samsung looked in the store compared to how it was going to look in my bedroom. Well I bit the $1,100 big one and went for it and my god if I wasn’t a couch potato before lord help me now.

This t.v. paired with the Samsung BD-P1500 Blu-Ray player I purchased with it (and also reviewed which you can read on my profile,) make one of the best teams since peanut butter and jelly. They compliment and communicate with eachother to a degree beyond my expectations. And the liquid crystal goodness doesn’t stop there either. If it’s available pick up an HD receiver from your cable provider(if it’s not, switch providers because wow, you know it’s 2008 right?) and the programs broadcasted in HD will also have you wondering why you bought that outdated RCA in the first place.. I mean.. nevermind.

With such a clear and brilliant picture when going in full 1080p it’s hard to say anything bad about this t.v., which is why I can’t right now. Sure the sound may not be up to par with the standards of the picture but if you
